Every January, FIRST releases the details of the year's game online, with a technical manual and an animated video explanation. Each team's objective for the next six weeks (entitled build season) is to strategize for, design, fabricate, and program a novel robot to compete in competitions. At each competition, teams complete in alliances of three, bringing together diverse groups of schools and clubs.
FIRST was founded in 1989 by Woodie Flowers and Dean Kamen, and is currently based in Manchester, New Hampshire. Its name is an acronym for its objective: For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. The FIRST mission statement reads, "to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership." FIRST provides easily-accessible yet innovative programs that help inspire kids and young adults to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and math; Bot-Provoking fully supports and embodies these values.
Our core values support this goal:
We are student-run; our mentors advise us, but they don’t do our work.
We embody cooperation and sportsmanship, especially in a competitive setting.
We are inclusive of members of all identities, bar none, and work to make our team representative of the Nueva student body.
We create structures that allow for graduating seniors and incoming freshmen.
We maximize learning by pushing ourselves to improve, technically and otherwise.
We create outreach with lasting and tangible impact.
We maintain a fun, engaging environment.
We view competition as a means to inspire and grow our skills.
Our culture emphasizes the value of creatively, uniquely solving problems.
Team 4904: Bot-Provoking is a robotics team located at The Nueva School’s Upper School campus in San Mateo, CA. We compete in the FIRST Robotics Competition, designing and building a new robot every year for annually defined competitive challenges over the course of six weeks.
Our team is comprised of nearly 100 Nueva students in grades 9 through 12, over a third of whom are non-male-identifying. At our relatively new school, nearly a quarter of the entire student body participates in the Robotics team. Our team is determined to empower young students’ diverse interests; team members choose to focus on topics ranging from the technical design, fabrication, programming, and electronics of the robot to community STEAM outreach, team fundraising and public relations, and task management.
Our work would be impossible without the support of our sponsors:
4904 Bot-Provoking proudly uses YourKit, for monitoring and profiling Java and .NET applications.
YourKit is the creator of YourKit Java Profiler, YourKit .NET Profiler, and YourKit YouMonitor.
