DATAS is a student-led team that curates weekly, accessible, high quality presentations that examine real world problems through a data-based lens. We are a journal club and scientific presentation program all in one! For a decade, we have hosted over 200 scientific presentations on cutting-edge COVID-19 research to racial bias in machine learning to using quantum computers for drug discovery. Among our past guest speakers include Dr. Robert Sapolsky and Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee. Every Tuesday morning, we meet to read and discuss a uniquely interesting research paper, focusing on taking apart the study design, figures, implications, and other aspects through a critical lens. Every Friday is a Science Friday, where we host a student or faculty presenter who presents on a topic of interest to a school-wide audience! Students have the opportunity to undergo a training process under more experienced peers to develop their presentations, and can access recordings of each Science Friday afterward.Â
The structure of our club was published by our founders in the FASEB (Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) Journal: https://doi.org/10.1096/fasebj.2019.33.1_supplement.617.22
