All things are made of matter which exists with different forms and properties. Matter can be described and classified by its observable properties. Materials with certain properties are well-suited for specific uses. Heating or cooling some types of matter may or may not irreversibly change their properties.
Standard 2.3.1
Plan and carry out an investigation to classify different kinds of materials based on patterns in their observable properties. Examples could include sorting materials based on similar properties such as strength, color, flexibility, hardness, texture, or whether the materials are solids or liquids. (PS1.A)
📎 Hardness Scratch Test:
Use a paperclip to try scratching various materials like an eraser, a rock, or a wooden spoon. This allows students to classify materials by their degree of hardness.
Standard 2.3.2
Construct an explanation showing how the properties of materials influence their intended use and function. Examples could include using wood as a building material because it is lightweight and strong or the use of concrete, steel, or cotton due to their unique properties. (PS1.A)
🎈 The Balloon Inflator (States of Matter)
Show that gas is matter and takes up space, even if you can't see it clearly.
The Setup: Pour a small amount of vinegar into an empty water bottle. Use a funnel to put two spoonfuls of baking soda inside a balloon.
The Task: Stretch the balloon over the bottle neck and lift it so the powder falls into the vinegar.
The Lesson: The chemical reaction creates carbon dioxide (gas), which fills the balloon.
Standard 2.3.3
Develop and use a model to describe how an object, made of a small set of pieces, can be disassembled and reshaped into a new object with a different function. Emphasize that a great variety of objects can be built from a small set of pieces. Examples of pieces could include wooden blocks or building bricks. (PS1.A)
🧱 The "Un-Makeable" Structure (Properties of Parts)
A core 2nd-grade standard is understanding that small pieces can be disassembled and made into something new.
The Setup: Give each student the same set of 20 LEGO bricks or wooden blocks.
The Task: Build a "tower." Then, take it apart and use the exact same pieces to build an "animal."
The Lesson: Matter is made of smaller pieces that can be rearranged to create different objects.
Standard 2.3.4
Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about changes in matter caused by heating or cooling. Emphasize that some changes can be reversed and some cannot. Examples of reversible changes could include freezing water or melting crayons. Examples of irreversible changes could include cooking an egg or burning wood. (PS1.B)

This helps students understand how heat energy changes solids into liquids.
The Setup: Place an ice cube in three different spots: a sunny windowsill, a dark cupboard, and in a student’s cupped hands.
The Task: Use a stopwatch to see which cube melts fastest.
The Lesson: Discuss how adding heat (energy) changes the state of matter.
Ice Cream in a Bag:
Mix milk, sugar, and vanilla in a small bag, then place it inside a larger bag with ice and salt. This illustrates phase changes (liquid to solid) and how temperature affects matter.
Rainbow Density Jar: Layer liquids like honey, dish soap, water, and oil in a clear jar. This visually demonstrates density and why certain objects sink or float.
