AAC Assessment
AAC is not one-size-fits-all. Hundreds of apps, speech-generating devices (dynamic and static), light-tech, and no-tech strategies, are available to help students unable to communicate effectively using their speech. Selecting an inappropriate system can lead to limited success or, in some cases, system abandonment. The National Joint Committee for the Communication of Persons with Severe Disabilities (NJC) states that "it is important that a clear picture of the individual's current capabilities and needs are considered in order to select communication devices, communication techniques, and the symbol systems or symbol sets."
It is our mission to encourage the use of evidence-based procedures to select the most appropriate augmentative and alternative (AAC) system to help each student communicate to his or her fullest potential.
If you are unsure about a situation or the progress of a student, please reach out. The NTDSE assistive technology coordinator can come to observe, meet with your team, and help you guys problem-solve.
