TAKE ACTION

LET'S MAKE A CHANGE

Real change arises from recognizing the root causes of these disparities and actively advocating for a fairer and more accessible educational experience for everyone. By challenging systemic issues and supporting one another, we can work towards a university where opportunities are genuinely equal.

In the debate surrounding the presence of wealthy students, often referred to as “burgis,” in UP, a critical question arises: who is truly at fault for the disparity between affluent students and those from lower-income backgrounds? Is it the students themselves, or is the problem embedded in the system?

Blaming individuals whether the burgis for occupying spaces or the underprivileged for their inability to compete misses the larger issue. The educational system, in many respects, perpetuates inequality. From access to quality education and review centers for entrance exams like the UPCAT to the financial resources that enable some students to excel while others struggle, the system creates barriers that disproportionately favor the privileged.

This observation does not imply that we should vilify students from affluent families for pursuing opportunities, nor should we overlook the challenges faced by lower-income students. Instead, we must hold the system accountable for creating conditions that inherently disadvantage the less privileged. By addressing the system’s flaws, we can advocate for changes that promote equity and establish a university that genuinely serves the people.

Change will not result from attacking individuals based on appearances or assumptions about wealth. It will stem from addressing the systemic inequalities that continue to widen the gap between the privileged and the marginalized. By focusing on the root causes, how the system is structured and how it fails to support all students equally we can effect real change. We must collectively push for reforms that ensure equitable access to education for all, regardless of economic background.

To drive meaningful change, our goal must be clear: to create a more equitable and inclusive educational system

First, enhancing access to quality education at the basic level is crucial. Many students from underprivileged backgrounds struggle to meet university qualifications due to inadequate educational resources in public schools. Improving the quality of education at all levels, particularly in underserved areas, is essential for leveling the playing field.

Second, the admissions process should be reviewed to ensure it is as fair and inclusive as possible. Providing free or affordable review materials and courses for the UPCAT can help bridge the gap for those unable to afford expensive review centers, allowing more students from lower-income families to compete on a more equal footing.

Third, financial aid and scholarships must be expanded and made more accessible to those in need. While UP offers the Iskolar ng Bayan program, there is a pressing need for increased transparency and outreach so that more students are aware of the options available to them. Scholarships should cover not only tuition but also living expenses, books, and other costs associated with university life.

Lastly, the university culture must foster inclusivity. As a state university, UP should actively cultivate an environment where students from all backgrounds feel a sense of belonging. Initiatives that promote diversity and inclusion such as mentorship programs, student support services, and awareness campaigns should be prioritized to bridge the social divide and create a cohesive community.

By focusing on these concrete changes, we can work towards a future where UP truly serves as a university for all Filipinos, regardless of social class.

Let's us take action by doing these:

Raise Awareness
Start conversations about educational inequality and the challenges faced by students from lower socio-economic backgrounds.

Support Local Initiatives
Volunteer or contribute to organizations that provide resources and assistance to underprivileged students preparing for the UPCAT.

Advocate for Changes
Engage with policymakers to promote educational reforms that ensure equitable access to resources for all students.

Create Safe Spaces for Dialogue
Encourage open discussions about privilege and access, fostering an environment where all voices can be heard.

Empower Voices
Uplift and support the experiences of marginalized students, encouraging them to share their stories and perspectives.

By working together, we can strive for a University of the Philippines that truly represents the diversity and aspirations of all Filipinos, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to thrive in their academic pursuits.
