INTRODUCTION
The Philippine Revolution of 1896, therefore, was a defining moment in the country's fight for independence, as such, a defining incident among the Filipinos in their freedom struggle against Spanish colonial rule. Propelling this movement was the Katipunan, the secret society, which sought to unite Filipinos for the sake of their freedom. With heroes such as Andres Bonifacio and Emilio Aguinaldo being part of the group, the Katipunan successfully played a vital role in awakening nationalism and igniting the desire for self-rule among Filipinos. This movement, with all the adversity it had, paved the country's way for eventual liberation, and it becomes an important aspect of Philippine history.
THE BIRTH OF THE KATIPUNAN
It was the Kataas-taasang, Kagalang-galangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan or KKK, popularly known as Katipunan. Founded by three men, Andres Bonifacio, Teodoro Plata, and Ladislao Diwa on July 7, 1892, the Katipunan was formed as a counter reaction to the apparent futility of peaceful reforms. This became a reaction to the La Liga Filipina founded by Jose Rizal. The main goal of the Katipunan was the independence of the Philippines through armed revolution. The objective of the organization was to reconcile Filipinos from classes and make them aware of national identity and pride. Initiates in the Katipunan were initiated with some severe kinds of classification: Katipun (a member), Kawal (a soldier), and Bayani (a hero). The class thus confirmed that only the best members would reach to top levels, assuming positions of leadership.
