This is my cosplay of Orpheus, a legendary Greek musician, poet, and prophet. Orpheus is the son of King Oeagrus of Thrace and Calliope, the patron of epic poetry. The goal of this cosplay was to show our creativity and resourcefulness to portray one Greek figure. In that case, I used materials that were already available in our home to portray my favorite Greek character. For my chiton, I used and sewed an old curtain and make it look like a chiton. The thing around my waist is a shoelace. For my wristbands, I used cardboard and put some colors and detached buttons from shirts in it. Lastly, for my footwear, I used a used rubber mat and slippers and intertwined them together to create an astonishing Greek footwear.
Orpheus is known from the story “Orpheus and Eurydice” where he married Eurydice, who was soon killed by a snakebite. With profound sadness and prolonged grief, Orpheus went to the Underworld and pleaded to let him take his wife back from Hades, ruler of the Underworld. Orpheus played his lyre and sang to Hades which touched Hades’ heart. Hades agreed to let Orpheus take Eurydice back to the Overworld, but with a catch. Hades told Orpheus that he was forbidden to look back until they reached the surface. Orpheus agreed and they then began their voyage back to the surface. Moments later, the two were almost at the Land of Living, but this anxious Orpheus, looked back to see if Eurydice was still with him. At that very moment, Eurydice was eaten by darkness and will stay in the Underworld forever.
I am personally moved by this story due to the fact that it showed us how two of the important Filipino traits, faithfulness and obedience to God, are important in one’s life. If Orpheus kept his faith and patience to not look back and became true to the words he said to Hades, he and Eurydice would have lived a happy life in the Land of Living. Just like us, Filipinos, on how important it is to keep our faith and trust to the creator. Just trust his words and anything good will surely follow.
