Carlos “Botong” Francisco was a muralist who was born and raised in Angono Rizal. For many decades; Francisco was a highly regarded mural painter, best known for his historical works. Along with Galo Ocampo and Victorio C. Edades, he was one of the first Filipino modernists to break away from Fernando Amorsolo's romanticism of Philippine scenes. Botong, also known for discovering the Angono Petroglyphs, the world's oldest prehistoric artwork. This Paleolithic art is made of 127 human and animal figures that date back to 3000 BC. In 1996, Presidential Decree 260 designated the petroglyphs as a national cultural treasure. The National Museum built a museum on its grounds. In 1973, He was awarded the title of "National Artist of the Philippines in Visual Arts."
I chose the painting by Carlos Francisco called Bayanihan. The painting is all about Bayanihan of the Filipino in the midst of adversity Bayanihan is a Filipino word derived from the word bayan, which means town, nation, or community in general. Bayanihan literally means "being a bayan," and thus refers to a spirit of communal unity and cooperation. Bayanihan is a common Filipino practice when someone needs help. In this art, we will see the determination of everybody to help his or her neighbor.
I think the materials that the artist used in his painting are pencils, different types of pens, paint brushes, acrylic paint, a palette, and canvas. The artist was inspired by the people who are happy helping each other, and helping anyone in the midst of crisis is one of the common Filipino characteristics that until now we have been practicing.
This artwork expresses the meaning itself very clearly, and I think Carlos made this artwork to show us the true meaning of bayanihan. In this artwork, we will see that the Filipino is following their old tradition of helping their neighbors relocate by gathering enough volunteers to carry the entire house and transfer it to another location. The transfer of the house was done in a cheerful and festive mood, and at the end of the day, the moving family will throw a small fiesta to show their gratitude for everyone who helped them in moving their house. Bayanihan begins with encouraging and helping each other to lessen their burdens. In this art, we can differentiate the bamboo stick as how strong the Filipino is to face any problems and the bahay kubo, or house, as the problem. The bamboo stick can represent how strong and resilient the Filipino is, and the bahay kubo, or house, can represent the problem of the Filipino. Carlos Francisco wants to tell us through his art that whatever kind of problem we are facing right now, we can overcome it with the help of the people who surround us.
When I saw his artwork of Carlos Francisco, it made me feel better in the midst of the pandemic that we’re facing right now. It made me feel better because it gave me hope that one day the pandemic will end and we will be able to return to our previous way of life, that we will be able to go outside without wearing a face mask. Everything I said will happen again if we all work together to end this pandemic. Our simple obedience to the law is a huge help in gradually overcoming the code. As long as we continue to work together to end this pandemic, we will see results. We only have one goal in this pandemic, and that is to get everything back to normal after the virus.
I think this art could help us in shaping the modern way in such a way that we will learn from this artwork the true meaning of bayanihan and continue to practice it. I know bayanihan is always in our nature because we are Filipinos, and it is natural for us to help each other in the midst of a crisis or even with a small problem that we are facing.
