Pacita Abad
Pacita Abad was born on October 5, 1946 in Batanes, Philippines. She is an Ivatan, a Filipino painter. She was supposed to follow her parents steps as a politician but during Marcos regime her father got involved in fraud activities in the government and for her safety Abad’s parents decided to send her to Spain to continue her studies. She then became a secretary in Dooley Foundation and seamstress at night while waiting for school. Abad lived on six continents and she also worked in more than 50 countries. She made over 4,500 paintings in her career. Her last massive project was the Alkaff Bridge located in Singapore. It is a pedestrian bridge with a length of 55 meters. She painted the bridge during the last year of her life, which was in 2004. She had her daily radiotherapy for her cancer during painting the Alkaff Bridge.
Alkaff Bridge
I got interested in her the very first time I saw her on the internet while searching. She seems very happy in her picture and just shows how she enjoys life doing what she loves and what she likes. She actually has a lot of beautiful paintings, and I like all of them but her very last artwork catches my attention cause this just represents her determination and her passion for painting. She has cancer while making this massive project and also undergoing treatment. But sadly she passed away in the same year in 2004 at the age of 58. Even though she died her artworks are all alive and continuously gives inspiration amongst us to just keep on doing what you love, don’t just give up when a struggle or problems comes in your life. She keeps on fighting and painting until her last breath.
