📢  Newark Teachers Contract Update - June 9, 2026

Newark teachers are currently negotiating a new contract with the district. 

A new contract will provide support to ALL teachers, which in turn helps support YOUR children.

Has your child suffered because… Classes were canceled or filled by multiple guest teachers

What this means… Educators aren’t encouraged to remain in or come to Newark. They seek employment in more stable districts that pay more.

Has your child suffered because… Classes were not offered (NMHS)

What this means… The district would rather outsource classes than attract new teachers.

Has your child suffered because…  IEPs were out of compliance, and services were not provided.

What this means… SPED leadership is constantly changing. The district pays for costly temporary contracted employees to fill positions. Little/no support or training is provided for new teachers, leading to burnout or moving elsewhere.

Has your child suffered because… Administrators were replaced each year.

What this means… Again, the staff receives inconsistent leadership and support. At some point, teachers leave, especially the younger ones. Within the next 10 years, there will be an exodus of veteran teachers, leaving few who will extend their longevity service.

Who will be left to teach Newark’s children?

Our students deserve the attention and support they need to succeed.

Dear Newark Unified School Board Members,

I am a Newark parent/community member writing to urge you to prioritize our students by prioritizing our teachers. Newark students deserve stable schools with experienced teachers. A strong contract, with compensation that competes with surrounding districts, will help retain the great teachers we have and attract new educators to our district.

Please continue working toward a fair agreement that supports Newark students and teachers.
