Monthly Newsletters 2023/24

JUNE 2024

Hello families!

It is absolutely crazy that this is the last monthly newsletter I will send you this year! Our schedule is still packed full of curriculum, but we will add in as much fun as we can too.

June is a very busy month filled with lots of celebrating and lots of End of Year assessments. We still have a lot of work to do, and over the next few weeks I will post lots of updates in Parent Square so don't forget to check there.

We are finishing up our unit on Early Explorers of North America and will end the year with a short unit on Ecology. We'll be spending some time outside (weather cooperating)  as part of our work so students should bring a beach towel or blanket.

In math we are reviewing for our end of year test, and will finish the month with a Unit on geometry, specifically, polygons, quadrilaterals and angles.

Next week is both our Water Day (6/11 from 10:00-12:00) and our Field Trip (6/12 from 10:15-1:30.  Reminders will be sent home for how to prepare for both days.

I will add a summer section to my website at thhe end of June so students do not lose progress made over the summer.  Students can lose three months of growth if they don't read every day! There will be lost of fun things they can do to practice skills and I will keep our class accounts open until I need to switch over to next year's class. If your student would like to practice writing skills, they are welcome to email me a letter and we can be summer penpals. (I will be traveling for 2 weeks in July though)

I will truly mess this awesome group of kids and hope you will all keep in touch. Please don't hesitate to contact me at any time.

May 2024:

Hello families!

I can NOT believe we are down to our last 8 weeks! We still have lots to do so please review the SOAR expectations with your student

All students will take the NYS test in Math this month, May 6th and 7th. Click on More in the bar at the top of this page to go to the state test section of the website . You can learn about the tests there and even look at past test questions to get an idea of what your students should know and be able to do at this point in the year.  Feel free to call or email me with any questions also. Before break I sent home a review packet.  Click here if you need a new copy.

We are in the middle of our Native American unit this week. We have learned how people origonally came to our continent through Beringia and are learning a little about the groups that settled in each region of our country. Our program refers to some Native Americans in the Northeast, specifically locally, as Iroquois.  This is not an appropriate term for the Haudenosaunee. We will use this as a teachable moment to discuss why this happened and that even in this age there are prejudices and biases and not everyone knows all of our history, as our program comes from another part of the country. We have contacted the program to look into fixing use of this disrespectful term.

In math we are working hard on 2- step word problems and are reviewing everything we've done this year in preparation for next week's test. After the test we will start a short unit on perimeter.

In science we will be learning about life cycles, in social studies we are learning the continents and oceans. Students can practice this gameThere are also others on the Social studies page of my site in the task bar above.

As always please check the agenda and clear out the purple folder nightly. Having a specific place to keep these each night will help build good habits to carry into middle school.  Students should be reading every night for homework as well as what we write in the agenda.

In our WINN block, we will be working in book clubs to increase fluency and comprehension.

End of year information: June 12th will be our field trip to The Wild (More information to come).  June 7th, the 1/2 day there will be a carnival in the evening sponsored by our amazing PTG.  Other plans are still in the works.

Thanks for all you do at home!

April 2024:

Hello families!

Spring is in the air! We're all feeling  little cabin fever, so hopefully the weather will improve soon.

Please note that April 8th is now a full day off due to the eclipse!

All students will take the NYS test ELA this month, April 11th and 12th. The Math Test will be May 6th and 7th. Click on More in the bar at the top of this page to go to the state test section of the website . You can learn about the tests there and even look at past test questions to get an idea of what your students should know and be able to do at this point in the year.  Feel free to call or email me with any questions also. There is not really anything that can be studied, but students should understand how to write a complete RACE answer. We have learned some test taking skills and are pacticing typing our writing pieces.

We are finishing our space unit this week. Our students had SO many questions, many of which don't have a solid answer yet, but they were very interested in the content. NASA SPace Place has some great stuff on their website if you'd like to get involved in their space curiosity. After the state test we will begin Unit 8 in CKLA: Native Americans.

In math we are well into our fraction unit, and are working on comparing and finding equivalent fractions.  The kitchen is a great place to reinforce these skills. Our next unit will be a mini unit on elspsed time.  For this unit students are expected to already know how to tell time in an analog clock, so any practice you can do at home would be super helpful.  I will send home clocks next week. Please continue to keep practicing those multiplication flashcards and start on division. The quicker students can memorize facts, the easier math will be.

April is Digital Citizenship Month.  We will spend a little time discussing this in school, but if you'd like to talk about it as a family, click here for some great resources.

Please check the agenda and clear out the purple folder nightly. Having a specific place to keep these each night will help build good habits to carry into middle school.  Students should be reading every night for homework as well as what we write in the agenda.

In our WINN block, we will be working on review of content from earlier in the year, and reading for pleasure.

End of year information: June 12th will be our field trip to The Wild (More information to come).  June 7th there will be a carnival in the evening sponsored by our amazing PTG.  Other pland are still in the works.

Thanks for all you do at home!

March 2024:

Hello families!

I can not believe we are beginning our last trimester. PARP has started and students who log and turn in a calendar with 360 minutes will earn a free pass to Water Safari. They are very excited! It is also Heart Month in Phys. Ed.. Information on both of these things came home last week.

All students will take the NYS tests in Math and ELA this trimester. Click on More in the bar at the top of this page to go to the state test section of the website .  You can learn about the tests there and even look at past test questions to get an idea of what your students should know and be able to do at this point in the year.  Feel free to call or email me with any questions, and we will discuss this at our conference also. We will work hard this trimester on what perseverance and a quality work ethic look like, and how we can grow as much as possible thinking about and attending to these traits.

In math we finished review of addition and subtraction and learned how to round. A great deal of time over the next month will be dedicated to understanding and comparing fractions. Please continue to keep practicing those multiplication flashcards and start on division. The quicker students can memorize facts, the easier math will be.

In science we will be building Roly Poly habitats and, using fair tests and observation to experience how scientists learn about organisms. We will also get lots of space knowledge from our CKLA unit.

In ELA we will be starting Unit 7: Astronomy. The students have SO many questions already!  This is a favorite unit for 9 year olds and I many space books they can borrow.  Tapping in to this curiosity might help with those PARP minutes!

Please check the agenda and clear out the purple folder nightly. Having a specific place to keep these each night will help build good habits to carry into middle school.  Students should be reading every night for homework as well as what we write in the agenda.

In our WINN block, we will be working on typing skills and learning how to respond with evidence and take a test online, as well as reading challenging books.

I am looking forward to chatting wth you all at parent- teacher conferences!

Thanks for all you do at home!

February 2024:

Hello families!

This sunny start to February has been refreshing. The lack of snow has made the playground very muddy so I'm hoping we'll get outside more often now.  Many kids are choosing to stay in so this is a good time to talk about the health benefits of sunshine and fresh air!

In math we are finishing review of addition and subtraction. Subtraction is very difficult for students of this age. Students can access IXL at home for math practice.  This would be a good at home practice option since we do not spend much time on it in the 3rd grade curriculum. A big chunk of the next few months will be spent on fractions. This can easily be reinforced in your kitchen at home. Understaning the basics of fractions will be essention to math understandings for the next several years. We will use lots of hands on resources in class. Please continue to keep practicing those multiplication flashcards. The quicker students can memorize facts, the easier math will be.

In science we learned about light and sound in our CKLA unit and will be learning about what organisms need to survive, as well as fair tests as scientists and observers.

In CKLA we will be starting our unit on The Viking Age. We will learn about trade and how ideas spread around the world, and will read some Norse mythology. We will continue to work on geography concepts, learning the continents and oceans. There are geography practice games here.

Please check the agenda and clear out the purple folder nightly. Having a specific place to keep these each night will help build good habits to carry into middle school.  Students should be reading every night for homework as well as what we write in the agenda.

In our WINN block, we are working on phonemic awareness, syllable types and have started book clubs with books chosen by the students. Everyone has been workimg very hard!

Finally, we will be having a party on Feb. 14th. More information will go home on Feb. 5th. It will be similar to our last party. The students will rotate through 4 stations.  Sign ups will be sent out by 2/5 also. Parents are welcome but siblings can not attend per building rules. Please let me know in advance if you are coming so I can inform the office.

Thanks for all you do at home!

January 2024:

Hello families!

Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful break and holiday, and had time for some rest and relaxation. This month we will finish our 4th CKLA Unit: Ancient Rome, and begin Unit 5: Light and Sound. We will continue spelling patterned lists as well as work with prefixes and suffixes, and will spend some extra time on paragraph writing, and writing to learn new vocabulary. We are also working on cursive and typing but do not have nearly enough time, so any practice you have time for at home will be very helpful.  Students have cursive videos in Google Classroom. Not all students will master all letters this year but they should be able to sign their names before summer.

In math we are beginning a unit on Area of Squares and Rectagles, and will then move on to some very short units on place value, rounding, amd addition and subtraction of 3 and 4 digit numbers. Please keep practicing those flashcards. The quicker students can memorize facts, the easier math will be.

In science we will be studying Force and Motion, but will also learn a little about light and sound during the CKLA Unit,

We will continue to work on geography concepts, learning the continents and oceans. There are geography practice games here.

For recess we will continue to go outside unless the temperature goes below 15. Students should bring snowpants, boots, hats and gloves. Extras can be left at school. Just let me know if you need any of these items.

Please check the agenda and clear out the purple folder nightly. Having a specific place to keep these each night will help build good habits to carry into middle school.  We will be working on independence as well.  You can help at home by asking your student to be responsible for his or her school things.

This month all students will take the Aimsweb test for math and reading.  I will be in touch about results. These tests help us plan our WINN blocks.

Finally, a HUGE thank you to everyone who helped by donating time, or supplies for our Holidap party. The kids had so much fun. I am so grateful to work with such amazing families!

Thanks for all you do at home!

December:

Hello families!

I can't believe we are almost to the end of 2023! We finished our 3rd CKLA Unit: The Human Body, and will begin Unit 4: Ancient Rome. We will continue spelling patterned lists and are working on prefixes and suffixes, as well as strategies for decoding the multisyllable words we are finding in our reading texts. As students get older and read more difficult text they will need to practice with the decoding skills they learned in the past. Continuing to read aloud from good fit books will help them continue to build reading skills.  Click here to see some strategies you can use at home.

We are working on making complete paragraphs a habit.  This includes a topic sentence that introduces the main idea, three supporting details, and a concluding sentence that wraps up the paragraph with no new details. We will keep practicing.  We will also continue trying to make a habit of using capitals and punctuation, as well as writing in complete sentences, even on the computer.

Students have begun self paced lessons on cursive writing. The are not expected to write in cursive at this point and should not until they have practiced each letter. That way we don't have to undo any inaccurate letter habits. Video lessons can be found in Google Classroom.

In math we are beginning our 2nd division unit this week. We learned strategies to find and answer and will begin practicing each divisor. Please keep practicing those flashcards. The quicker students can memorize facts, the easier math will be.

In science we are finishing weather and climate and will begin a unit on Force and Motion.

We will work on geography concepts of government as we have time which will tie in with our reading unit on Ancient Rome. There are geography practice games here.

Our class has been talking every day about our positivity strengths. In December we will also be continuing this weeks kindness challenge. I hope this carries over into your homes!

For recess we will continue to go outside unless the temperature goes below 15. Students should bring snowpants, boots, hats and gloves. Extras can be left at school. Please let me know if you need any of these items

More info will be coming soon about our winter celebration.  It will be on Dec. 20th and you will be welcome.  Signups will come out soon in parent

Thanks for all you do at home!

November:

Hello families!

October went by so fast in room 126! We finished our first CKLA Unit: Classifying Animals, and have begun Unit 3: The Human Body Systems. This unit starts spelling lists.  They are very long so the district has made shorter, more manageable lists. These will come home on half sheets.  In our program, lists are not by week, the are every 5-6 lessons.  This means there will not be a Monday list, and test on Friday. Because of days, off, assemblies, lessons running longer, there is not a strict schedule, but a test will generally fall around 5 days after the list.We will write it in the agenda.

We spent a lot of time planning and writing paragraphs in the last unit, so part of our assessment was for students to write a complete paragraph on their own.  This includes a topic sentence that introduces the main idea, three supporting details, and a concluding sentence that wraps up the paragraph with no new details. We will keep practicing.  We are also trying to make a habit of using capitals and punctuation, as well as writing in complete sentences.

In math we are finishing Multiplication units this week. Please keep practicing those flashcards. The quicker students can memorize facts, the easier math will be. We will be starting division Nov. 8th. Card games are a good way to practice partitioning. Some of the multiplication lessons are very challenging.  We are introducing distributive property which is difficult for students to master.  We will cirlce back to in in a few units. We have noticed that many students also are still learning addition and subtraction facts, so we will keep practicing those also.

In science we are still learning about weather and climate. We will be doing some research on hazardous weather, and will move on to a unit about force and motion.

Our class has been talking every day about our positivity strengths. This month we are learning about being aware of how our words and actions affect others, bravery, and gratitude.

For recess we will continue to go outside. Once the snow is sticking, students should bring snowpants, boots, hats and gloves. Extras can be left at school. Please let me know if you need any of these items

I apologize for having to move conferences around. I will be sending home a blue sheet tomorrow (11/2) with a date and time.  Some are during the school day, but I have someone able to cover for me. If the day or does not work, I'll call or email you and we will find a good time.

Thanks for all you do at home!

October:

Hello families!

We have had a great start to the year in room 126. Third grade can be a big adjustment for many students.  We move a little faster, learn more independence and we are teaching students how to advocate for what they need. Students will learn lots of strategies to help with work and we will ask them to at least try a strategy before asking for help.

We completed our first unit about classic tales in CKLA, and have begun our Animal Classification unit.  Students have done a spectacular job in reading. We are also well into our Multiplication units. The third grade standard states that students should be fluent in all multiplication and division facts within 100 by the end of the year. For the first two report cards, it is expected that they can use a strategy to find the answer.  By the third report card they should know many facts and quickly use a strategy to find the answer. We have started sending home flashcards and there  are many games online to make practice more fun if you do a simple google search. Youtube has many songs for each set of multiples. This worked best for my own kids and we used spent time in the car to learn them! In science we are learning about weather and climate. We have looked at weather tools and temperature trends for our area over time and will be learning about hazardous weather next.

Our class made a video for the Chipper morning show for the character strength of open mindedness within the positivity project. We will spend time each day discussing the traits that help to make one successful. There is student choice time embedded into each lesson.  We are working on the difference between choosing an activity that is easy, or well liked, and choosing something that will challenge the brain and support growth. This is something that can easily be reinforced at home by making sure students practice facts that they don't yet know, and read a good fit book.

Be sure to see the Math and ELA pages in the top menu to see some resources for the things we will be studying.

I look forward to working with you this year!

September: Fall is in the air...

Hello families!

This month we will spend the first few weeks building community and positive work habits.  Open House will be Thursday the 14th at 6:00. Students will share the class agreements they made based on our building's SOAR rules, and show you around the classroom. Sign up for fall conferences can be found in Parent Square, or you can email me directly.  I am happy to do in person or virtual!

Third grade is a little different from the previous years.  We will work hard on learning independence, developing a growth mindset, and will be shifting from just learning to read to also reading to learn.  This transition takes some time but I am confident we will be successful together. Do not hesitate to call  or email if you have concerns or ideas!

Be sure to see the math and ELA pages to see some resources for the things we will be studying in our first units.

I look forward to working with you this year!
