DIVISION

Fluently divide multi-digit numbers using the standard algorithm

Divisibility - A divisibility test is a rule for determining whether one whole number is divisible by another. It is a quick way to find factors of large numbers.

Divisibility Test for 3: if the sum of the digits of a number is divisible by 3, then the number is divisible by 3.

Slide and Divide Math Tip:Long division

"Does McDonalds Serve Burgers Raw"

Divide - Multiply - Subtract - Bring down - Repeat

Description To help conquer long division, give each student a paper clip and review the steps of long division. When it’s time to work, have each child write the simple division acronym “DMSB” for “Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring Down” on her paper and place the paper clip on the D. When the student completes a step, she moves her paper clip to the next letter and solves the next step. -

DECIMALS

Decimals - A Decimal Number is a number that contains a Decimal Point

Notes:see below links for help:

Adding Decimals:

To add decimals, follow these steps:

Write down the numbers, one under the other, with the decimal points lined up

Put in zeros so the numbers have the same length

Then add using column addition, remembering to put the decimal point in the answer

Example: Add 1.452 to 1.3

Line the decimals up: 1.452

+1.3

"Pad" with zeros: 1.452

+1.300

Add: 1.452

+1.300

-----------

2.752

Subtracting Decimals:

To subtract decimals, follow these steps:

Write down the two numbers, one under the other, with the decimal points lined up.

Add zeros so the numbers have the same length

Then subtract normally, remembering to put the decimal point in the answer

Example: Subtract 0.03 from 1.1

Line the decimals up:

1.1

- 0.03

"Pad" with zeros:

1.10

- 0.03

Subtract:

1.10

- 0.03

------------

1.07

Multiplying Decimals:

Just follow these steps:

Multiply normally, ignoring the decimal points.

Then put the decimal point in the answer - it will have as many decimal places as the two original numbers combined.

In other words, just count up how many numbers are after the decimal point in both numbers you are multiplying, then the answer should have that many numbers after its decimal point.

Example: Multiply 0.03 by 1.1

start with:

0.03 × 1.1

multiply without decimal points:

3 × 11 = 33

0.03 has 2 decimal places,

and 1.1 has 1 decimal place,

so the answer has 3 decimal places:

0.033

Dividing Decimals:

To divide a decimal number by a whole number:

Use Division or Long Division (ignoring the decimal point)

Then put the decimal point in the same spot as the dividend (the number being divided)

Example: Divide 9.1 by 7

Ignore the decimal point and use Long Division:

13

7 )91

9

7

21

21

0

Put the decimal point in the answer directly above the decimal point in the dividend:

1.3

7 )9.1

The answer is 1.3
