When and how will I be notified that I am eligible?
Students in eleventh grade, who have a cumulative weighted GPA of 89.5 will receive a National Honor Society application in late December or early January. If a student does not receive an application in the mail and believes he/she meets the grade requirement, please see your counselor to verify your weighted GPA and then contact National Honor Society Adviser Mrs. Capria in room 307.
How is membership granted to any given student?
Membership to the Cicero-North Syracuse Chapter of the National Honor Society is granted to those members who meet all the requirements established by the constitution and by the Faculty Council. The Faculty Council will review all completed applications and grant membership to students who prove themselves to be outstanding in each of the following areas: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character.
To be eligible for consideration a student must have a minimum of:
A cumulative GPA of 89.5 or above
Participation in at least three extracurricular activities sports or clubs in and outside of school. There must be a combination of both school and community activities
Provide evidence of more than 20 service hours done for verifiable organizations
Exemplary character based on the letter of recommendation and teacher input
Meeting the above minimum requirements DOES NOT guarantee acceptance. These are the minimum requirements to be met and all students will be assessed based on all facets of their application provided.
What happens after I earn an application?
If you receive an application and would like to apply for membership, begin filling in the information required and get two references to fill out the recommendation form. Remember, one recommendation form must be filled out by a Cicero-North Syracuse High School Teacher who is not a relative. Provide your references an envelope to use to return the form to you in a sealed and signed envelope. Your recommendation forms must be returned attached to your application.
The application includes the date the forms are due (Usually they will be due the Friday before regents week in January). The faculty council does not consider late forms.
The faculty council will review the student applications. Participation in school and community activities and acquiring volunteer hours is required for membership.
Students and parents are notified by mail of the final selections. These letters are typically mailed out over February break.
The induction takes place at an annual induction ceremony held at Cicero-North Syracuse High School at the end of March.
All members of the National Honor Society are expected to keep up the levels of scholarship, citizenship, service and character that were first required for initial membership.
Students accepted into the National Honor Society are expected to attend monthly meetings, participate in all fundraising and service projects for the Society, and to maintain an academic average and participation level that enabled them to be accepted into the National Honor Society.
Where do I go for additional help?
The advisor for National Honor Society is Mrs. Capria. Students who have questions or need help with their application should see her in Room 307.
