READING and WRITING - We will be implementing a new curriculum for Reading and Writing this year that was adopted by the Nashoba Regional District just last spring. The program is Imagine Learning EL Education and will have three modules studied over the course of the year; Stories of Human Rights, Biodiversity in the Rainforest, and Athlete Leaders of Social Change.
MATH - We will be following the Common Core Standards for 5th Grade Math which can be found at this website: http://www.corestandards.org/Math/Content/5/introduction. We will using the Bridges program to deliver our curriculum, which is in its third year at Nashoba Regional District. The Bridges Parent and Family website can be accessed: HERE.
SCIENCE and TECH. ED. - Science instruction covers physical, earth, and life sciences as well as engineering. We typically focus upon one science topic each term and intersperse the engineering through the units of study. Some of the units we will be studying are: Energy, Space, Life Cycles, Animal Adaptations, Earth Processes, and Basic Chemical Reactions. A more detailed list of learning standards can be found in the Nashoba School District's Science Curriculum for Fifth Grade, which aligns with the Massachusetts Science curriculum for the 3-5 Grade Span.
SOCIAL STUDIES - The fifth grade social studies curriculum focuses on the history of the United States. Topics covered include:
early colonization and growth of colonies; reasons for revolution,
The Revolutionary War, and the formation of government;
Principles of United States government;
Growth of the Republic;
Slavery, the legacy of the Civil War and the struggle for civil rights for all.
