I have worked in education for fifteen years and have experience as the lead teacher in separate, small-group literacy and math classrooms, as a co-teacher in inclusion in all core academic subject areas, as a special education literacy specialist, and as a special education team chair / coordinator. My background is in elementary and middle school. I have earned a Master's degree in special education from Lesley University, am licensed in Moderate Disabilities (preK-8 & 5-12) and Elementary (1-6) education, and have a Sheltered English Immersion endorsement. I am continually working to maintain current knowledge and skills in effective instruction.
In the past, I have been the primary reading instructor for struggling students, as well as providing reading intervention as part of general education support programs. To expand my toolbox of strategies to support students, I am Orton-Gillingham (OG) trained at the Associate level and have participated in training in the Wilson Reading System (an OG-based program). I have earned a micro-credential (35 hours) in the Science of Reading from SUNY New Platz, and completed the Pathways to Proficient Reading course (55 hours) through the AIM Institute.
I also have a strong background in math, science, and technology. In the past, I founded and ran an elementary school coding and robotics afterschool program. Prior to teaching, I had a career in web application development. I am very comfortable utilizing technology to support instruction, planning, and data collection, and am a Gemini Certified Educator and Google Certified Educator (Level 1 & 2).
“Many of these children and adults [struggling with learning problems] seem to be drowning in an ocean of self-perceived inadequacy. ... If there is an ocean of inadequacy, then there must be islands of competence – areas that have been or have the potential to be sources of pride and accomplishment. ... We must help children and adults to identify and reinforce these islands so that at some point they become more dominant than the ocean of inadequacy.”
- Dr. Robert Brooks, The Search for Islands of Competence: A Metaphor of Hope and Strength
