7th Grade Science with Mrs. Sorrows

Choose from these suggested activities to explore different science and engineering topics over the summer. Students entering 7th grade are encouraged to complete 3 of these over the summer and share your work with me at the start of school!

Making Observations

Dragonflies! One of my favorite spring, summer and fall activities is looking at dragonflies and noticing all the different ones we have right in our area. So I'm posting some resources to help you identify what dragonflies you see. Look for them at sunny times of day - they seem to disappear when it is cloudy or rainy! The linked document has some common ones seen in our area. For more information on how to identify them, see my detailed description.

What are the dynamics of life on Earth?

We will examine the resources that support life, with a major focus on the water cycle and the distribution of water around the world. Here students developed an integrated understanding of water resources and the movement of water. For example, the amount of water in different kinds of resources and the length of time that water stays in particular reservoirs or locations affect its availability for use by humans, plants, and animals. In addition, understanding how molecules move at different temperatures can help you explain why it is likely to rain on one side of a mountain. Students will examine a wide variety of data in tables, graphs, and maps.

In addition, students examine what it means to be alive - what are the characteristics that living things share, and what do they need? This section involves data analysis of the relationships between predators and prey, and an examination of the types of relationships between living things.

Book Club take-aways

We had three great sessions of the 2021-2022 Parent/Teacher Book Club focused on the title, How to Talk so Teens Will Listen and Listen So Teens Will Talk. Written by best-selling authors, Faber and Mazlish, this book offers a practical resource with easy-to-implement suggestions to help us tackle the tough issues teens and families face today. One of the big messages that we discussed was validating the feelings of youth, especially when they encounter challenges or may have a different perspective than our own. We suggested the following websites as additional resources to families and staff:
