Welcome to our Hedgehog classroom! My name is Gayane Hanyaloglu, and I'm thrilled to be teaching second grade here at MRE. I have been a classroom teacher for over 20 years, and I am especially passionate about teaching science and math.
I have been using the Building Thinking Classroom practices for over 4 years. This is where students work in randomized partnerships solving both math and Fundations tasks on vertical whiteboards. We practice Habits of Character daily such as perseverance, empathy, and collaboration. Look below for more in-depth information on how I run a B.T.C. Classroom. I also run a weekly after school Science Club for second graders where students get to explore topics & tools ranging from chemistry to water surface tension to using microscopes.
Lastly, I have a Mystery Reader program where family, school staff, and community members are invited to our classroom every week to read a book aloud. What a wonderful way to help foster a love of reading while continuing to build that home-school connection! 📚
Some fun facts about me:
Favorite movie: Godzilla
Dessert: Moose Tracks ice cream
Hobbies: fitnessing on my Peloton, going to the theatre, working in my garden, and traveling with my husband and 2 daughters
In second grade we'll explore exciting subjects, engage in thought-provoking discussions, and work together to achieve academic and personal goals. I believe that learning is a collaborative process which needs to be engaging to help create a close knit classroom community. If you have any questions for me, please feel free to reach out using the contact button below!
Warmly,
Gayane
Here's a snippet of what a Building Thinking Classroom looks like on our first day of school.
Students think, share, and learn alongside their collaborative partner as they experience productive struggle, persevere, and solve tasks by explaining their thinking first. That's the key!
"Thinking is what we do when we don't know what to do!"
