Dear NRMS Students,

Our first full five-day week of school was filled with energy, excitement, new routines, and so many opportunities to connect, learn, and grow.

Walking through the halls and classrooms, I have been so impressed by the way our students are settling into the new school year. I have seen students supporting one another, teachers building relationships, and classrooms filled with curiosity and learning. These are the moments that remind us what makes our Hornet community so special.

Halloween Dance

We are very excited to share that we will be hosting a NRMS Halloween Dance this year!

Permission slips and payment requests will be shared soon.

• DATE: Thursday, October 15th

• TIME:  5:30-7:30 PM

• WHERE:  NRMS Gym

We want our dance to be a fun opportunity to bring our NRMS community together, make memories, and have students enjoy time with peers! At the same time, we want to make sure everyone has a safe, positive, and enjoyable experience.

Below is some important information to help make the evening a success for everyone:

• This event is for current NRMS students only. Guests or students from other schools will not be permitted to attend.

• The NRMS Student Handbook and Code of Conduct will be in effect throughout the event. Students are expected to follow all school rules and behavioral expectations.

• No cell phones will be permitted inside the gymnasium. Students should leave cell phones at home or with their caregiver.

• Please be mindful of footwear for the dance. The dance will be held on our hardwood gym floor, so we kindly ask that students avoid shoes, boots, or high heels that may scuff or damage the floor. Thank you for helping us take care of our school space!

• Costumes must not include masks that block or significantly cover a student's face.

• Costumes may not include weapons, realistic weapon replicas, or accessories related to violence.

• All costumes must be school-appropriate and allow students to safely participate in the event.

• All students must be picked up by a caregiver, with ID, at the conclusion of the dance or with an approved upon emergency contact (this will be outlined on the permission slip).

  • Please note: Caregivers and emergency contacts will be required to present identification upon pick up.  We will be releasing students directly to caregivers or emergency contacts. No students will be released to anyone that is not listed upon the permission slip form. 

• Students will not be allowed admittance to the dance after 6:00pm, unless escorted by a caregiver to the door and speaking with an administrator/chaperone. 

• Students will not be permitted to leave the dance until 7:30pm, unless a caregiver/emergency contact comes to pick them up at the door and speaks with an administrator/chaperone.

Announcing this year’s Musical: Matilda Jr.!

NRMS Hornet Productions is excited to announce this year’s musical, Matilda Jr.! 

If your student(s) is interested in either auditioning to be an actor, or joining our tech crew team, please join a brief (30 minutes at the most) parent meeting in the NRMS Cafeteria on Thursday, September 24th directly after Back to School Night.  During this meeting we will discuss auditions, rehearsal schedule, and parent help that will be needed to ensure that the musical is successful.  

On Friday, September 25th there will be a meeting from 3:00-4:00pm for all students who are interested in participating in the NRMS Cafeteria.

School Bus Evacuation Drill

As part of our ongoing commitment to student safety, North Reading Middle School will be conducting a school bus evacuation drill with our students on Friday, September 25, 2026. 

The purpose of this drill is to ensure that students understand what to do in the event of an emergency while riding a school bus. 

Please remind students that, just like our school safety drills, the goal is to practice, be prepared, and know what to do in an emergency. Students are expected to follow the directions of the bus driver and school staff throughout the drill.

We appreciate your partnership in helping us reinforce the importance of safety and preparedness with our students.

Cafeteria & Lunch Updates

• We appreciate the  way our students are entering, interacting, and cleaning up in the cafeteria.

  •  As a friendly reminder, we would like to remind students to please refrain from “flipping” water bottles in the cafeteria. This allows us to maintain a safe and positive environment for all students.

• Below are some important reminders for students:

  • Please take a look at the lunch menu ahead of your lunch block:

    • The lunch menu can be found here. 

  • Completing your main meal: 

    • Cafeteria staff has kindly asked that we remind students that their main meal includes a side consisting of a fruit and/or vegetable to be considered a complete lunch.

  •  Second lunch:

    • If you know you would like a second lunch, you may select it during the first time you go through the lunch line. You do not need to wait until the end of the lunch period or until the lunch line has cleared. This will help make the lunch process smoother and give everyone more time to enjoy their lunch.

  • Snacks: 

    • Will be available once the main lunch line has finished.

  • MySchoolBucks Account: 

    • Please make sure you have funds available in your MySchoolBucks account for snacks or a second lunch.

Hornets of the Month & Homeroom Competitions

Throughout the year, we will celebrate our students at monthly grade-level assemblies. Each month, teachers will nominate students who exemplify our core values of Respect, Responsibility & Community to be recognized as our Hornets of the Month.

Students will then  have the opportunity to compete in fun homeroom competitions (think “Minute to Win it”) throughout the year. The goal is to build teamwork & community and also celebrate school spirit. The winning homeroom will receive a trophy, to be kept with their homeroom teacher, until next month’s competition. 

We are excited to celebrate the many ways our Hornets make North Reading Middle School a great place to learn and grow!

Our First Hornets of the Month/Hornets Homeroom Competition will be held on Monday, September 28, 2026 during Extension. Green/gold colors & Hornet gear  are encouraged!

Green Tickets are coming back to NRMS!

We are excited to bring back green tickets at North Reading Middle School!

Green tickets are a special way for our staff to recognize and celebrate students who demonstrate our three NRMS Core Values:

• Respect

• Responsibility

• Community

Throughout the school day, students may receive a Green Ticket when a staff member notices them making a positive choice, helping someone, showing kindness, being responsible, or contributing to our school community.

 What happens when students receive a Green Ticket?

This year, students can place their Green Ticket into our school-wide Green Ticket Jar, located in the Main Office. Each week, we will draw one name from the jar, and the selected student will have the opportunity to receive a prize! Our first drawing will be held on Friday, 9/25. 

The goal of Green Tickets is not just about winning a prize, it is about recognizing the many positive choices our students make each day. We want to make sure students know that their actions, words, and contributions matter. Let's celebrate positive energy, kindness, and school spirit!

Extended Outdoor Time Pilot

The Outdoor Time Committee is seeking volunteers to help supervise grade 6, 7 & 8 for an Extended Outdoor Time Pilot during the fall of 2027.  We are seeking outdoor supervision after the three lunch blocks, which run from 11:57 a.m.- 1:18 pm. Please complete this form if you are interested in volunteering. 

Please note: We need a minimum number of volunteers each day, for each lunch, to safely allow students to go outside and to be able to run this extended pilot.

We are hoping to launch this extended pilot on 9/25/26 (weather and volunteer numbers permitting). We will be going over expectations with students. Please see below for reminders. Our goal is to ensure safety. We are looking forward to it!

• Designated Area: 

  • Students must remain within the designated plaza area. 

    • The plaza space directly between the MS and HS main entrances.

• Off-Limits: 

  • Students should not go down toward the Grade 7 classes.

  • Students should not go near the bus pickup/loading area.

• Visibility: 

  • Students must remain visible to supervisors at all times.

• Gardens: 

  • Students should respect the gardens and not stand on flowers/grass.

• Safety:

  • Railings/bike racks: Students should not sit or climb on the railings/bike racks. 

  • Students should not pick up or play with rocks, mulch, etc. 

We want the students to relax, but we also need to maintain a calm environment:

• Physical Safety: No running and no "hands-on" play (wrestling, pushing, etc.).

• Food & Drink: No food or snacks are to be brought outside.

Collaboration with Member Vocational Schools

North Reading Middle School actively collaborates with both Northeast Metropolitan Regional Vocational High School and Essex North Shore Agricultural and Technical High School to Inform students about the CTE/Vocational opportunities available to them. This collaboration includes:

• Information sharing: Annually, North Reading Middle School will provide member CTE/vocational schools with the names, addresses, and email addresses of all enrolled seventh and eight grade students. Caregivers may opt out of information sharing. Please complete this opt out form by September 28, 2026  if you are electing to opt out.
