Our assignments are weighted to emphasize achieving goals and mastery. I emphasize the assignments that demonstrate you're meeting the standards. The gradebook is updated biweekly (or about 7-10 school days). Late work may be graded 10-14 days after an email is received from the student. There are some exceptions to this pattern.
Performance (work assessing a specific skill, including longer, processed pieces of writing and formal assessments): 70%
-Processed Writing Pieces 70% tasks - Take Two chances may be offered for processed writing performance tasks after teacher feedback and student reflection are completed (The highest grade is kept). On-time submission only!
-Other/ Multiple-choice assessments - 70% tasks - may be offered with half-credit correction opportunities (does not apply to "Mid-term/Final Exam" tasks).
Preparation (work such as graphic organizers and rough drafts meant to prepare you for the performance tasks) - 20%
Practice (assignments and activities meant to help practice a particular skill. This includes finishing work started in class, independent reading (20 minutes per night recommended), flipped classroom Edpuzzle videos, and quicker, independent practice items) - 10%.
All "Homework" or work that needs to be completed outside of class will be used to build upon the next activity we complete. Missing homework can easily lead to missing pieces and steps that help you complete performance tasks (worth 70% of your overall grade).
In some cases, you can turn in "practice" or "preparation" work late to possibly earn some credit. You must email the names of the assignments that you completed late with a request for any credit possible.
"Performance" assignments will be accepted with a 10% reduction for every day it is late if you have not requested an extension by e-mail and reached a NEW agreed-upon deadline (work should be made up within a week of discussion).*
If you are "chronically" late or frequently skip homework assignments (3 or more "missing" assignments in one quarter), you may be required to come in on a regular afterschool help schedule.
Students must log missing work items. These missing assignment logs are automatically sent to parents/guardians and learning team members .
Please turn off your phone and place it in the caddy before the bell rings. Otherwise, you will come for 15-20 minutes after school detention time.
If you need to use your phone for something important, please wait until an appropriate time to ask for permission.
If your phone becomes a distraction during class, please give it to me for safekeeping until the end of the day.
Please ensure that your earbuds and headphones are off and away during learning time. If not, I will ask you to give me your devices for safekeeping until the end of the day.
Never attempt to use devices during bathroom/ hallway breaks; I will take them for the day.
Gaming/off-task screens - Gaming/ off-task screens during class is prohibited. We track computer usage on Classwize. After one warning per class period or multiple warnings per quarter, I will send a screenshot home. You will also be required to come 15-20 minutes after school.
Schools take plagiarism very seriously. We will discuss this in class, but take a look at THIS VIDEO for an explanation of different types of plagiarism.
Claiming AI (i.e. ChatGPT/ Grammarly AI) generated writing/ideas as your own is a form of plagiarism and is included in this policy.
Plagiarized "practice" and "preparation" assignments will be entered as a 0
Plagiarized "performance" assignments:
First offense: A discussion with me, a note in Schoology, and the ability to rewrite the assignment for a 50%
Second offense: Assignment will be entered as a 0, and we will have a meeting with your family.
Do not speak when teachers or classmates are speaking to the class.
Repeated infractions will result in active listening practice after school.
After two warnings (if needed, sticky notes placed on the desk), each additional disruption will cost you time after school.
If you are "chronically" disruptive you may be required to come after school and may be placed on a help schedule to work on your active listening skills at least once weekly.
When something in "life" comes up and you ask for an extension on a "performance" assignment, we will work together to determine a new due date. You must send me an e-mail with your request before the deadline and receive confirmation of a NEW agreed-upon deadline (date and time).
If an emergency has prevented you from asking for an extension in advance, please come to talk to me as soon as possible. We will work with you to determine a new deadline.
You will automatically receive an extension for work missed due to illness. You get one day of extension for every day you miss, plus one additional day. For example, if you are out for three days, you will have four school days to complete the missing work. You just need to email when the assignment is completed to request credit.
When you are out for ANY REASON, it is your responsibility to:
Review class assignment trackers, class notes slides, and all work posted on Schoology. Ask a friend /classmate. You can try assignments missed and email the teacher when completed. No need to email me and inform me of absenses-this is a nice personal touch" courtesy for those who do this. Thank you.
If need help/review with the teacher is needed, email your teacher to state the assignments/ tasks needed and your NEW deadline (date and time).
Make time to see your teacher after school if you need help making up the work or developing new deadlines.
You must try to keep up with Schoology assignments and resources before and during your planned absence. This includes missing class due to away-game travel.
All work is due the day you return to school (even if you do not have class with me that day).
Extensions should be discussed before deadlines, not after.
*All work is on Schoology*
You are responsible for being "prepared"(agenda/notebook/folder/charged computer/ pencil/headphones/ IDR book/ class materials). When unprepared with materials, please email your guardians a summary of what you lack and your reasoning. Every instance of "lacking materials" will result in 5-15 minutes after school. Multiple offenses mean an extra day after school to practice study skills.
You are free to bring a bottle of water with you to class.
There are no bathroom breaks during the first 15 minutes of class unless there is an emergency.
If you need a water or bathroom break, please wait until the instruction has finished, take the pass, and sign out. For safety reasons, we can only have one person out at a time, so I need to know who is out.
Please limit your time away from the classroom: limit two free passes per week. Thereafter, each break will cost you minutes after school.
Feel free to bring bottled beverages during class.
If you would like to eat a light snack, please ask for permission first. (We've had issues with ants!) No Full meals, please.
If snack wrappers/ crumbs are found on the floor, eating will cease in room 115 for the remainder of the quarter.
