Welcome!

Welcome to the website of the Vocal Music program at New Providence High School!

The Vocal Music program at NPHS is simply unparalleled in depth! All high school students may enroll in Concert Choir during the school day, which meets during our High School Ensemble period. Enrollment in Concert Choir has historically peaked above 200 students! We sing music mostly in English that works on our sight-reading skills and musicianship, and we perform at two concerts annually.

For students looking for an extra challenge, we offer an auditioned Select Choir that rehearses after school, once weekly, for 90 minutes and performs at occasional community events in addition to our concert programs. This SATB choir is expected to learn music on their own, and rehearsals are used to fine-tune the music and combine parts!

Within the Select Choir, students may also audition to be considered for the smaller Jazz Choir, which focuses on challenging harmonies and maintains a very active community presence, singing at everything from Rotary Club meetings to Tree Lightings! Students in Jazz Choir are expected to learn music on their own and rehearsals are used to work as a whole.

Each Spring, Select Choir also divides into a Treble Choir (Treble Makers) and Tenor/Bass Choir (The Accidentals) to offer students experience singing in these unique ensemble styles. Music tends to be more focused on the elements of music, like challenging rhythm, tight harmonies, and exciting text.

Students looking to hone in their technical skills may register for our 1-credit Voice Class. Each student meets once a week within a group of 3-4 students for a 1-hour Voice Class, fashioned much like a professional voice lesson. Assignments are aimed at improving vocal technique, and each student performs two solo pieces at our recitals annually. Students start with an art song and, by the time May comes around, we loosen it up and sing songs that fit the annual theme! This year's theme is Broadway, and students are allowed to pick a song that fits the theme and is a good match for their voice!
