Good readers read often and vary their reading selections. Reading during the summer months helps students develop their skills and promotes positive reading habits. All incoming sixth grade students are expected to read at least TWO books over the summer. Students can select books that are interesting and appropriate for them. They can read at their own pace and on their own terms. If necessary, they can abandon a book and make another choice. When the students come together in September as a community of readers, they will work with their teachers on an assignment related to their reading.
Steps for summer reading success: 1. Review titles appropriate for you as an incoming sixth grader. 2. Choose several titles you might enjoy. 3. Read! (It is a good idea to annotate/post-its or take notes, but there is no summer written assignment.) 4. Be prepared to talk and write about at least one of your book choices when you join your language arts class in September. This assignment will be your first grade as a sixth grade student for language arts!
