This course is designed to provide students with an introduction to the major genres of American literature and its historical background. There is a continuing focus on strengthening the communication skills of reading, writing, viewing, speaking, and listening in an integrated fashion. Instruction takes place through whole group, small group, and independent learning. The course provides opportunities to develop skills and apply strategies within the context of literature. A wide variety of texts is offered to meet reading abilities and personal interests. Several literary works are taught in class, and additional outside reading selections appropriate to the course are required. This course will also provide preparation for the PSAT, ACT, and SAT Evidence- Based Reading and Writing sections. Central to the writing program is the composing process in which students learn to prepare, write, and edit for a variety of audiences and purposes. Instruction in the support skills, grammar, usage, and mechanics, is stressed within the editing phase of the composing process.
