Class Policies and Course Description –
Students will explore the ever-changing relationship of man to his social, political, economic, and
physical environments throughout the curriculum of the World Studies course. In order to accomplish
this, historical themes such as the Renaissance, the Reformation, the Scientific Revolution,
Exploration, Colonialism, the Enlightenment, Imperialism, the era of the Great Wars and the Post-
War World will all be analyzed. Through a thorough examination of these themes, students will grasp
the “big ideas” in order to make connections across cultures and across time-spans to develop an
understanding of how this global history has shaped the modern world.
In addition to content-based knowledge and skills, this curriculum integrates the skills, knowledge,
and expertise of 21st Century Learning as identified by the Partnership for 21st Century Skills.
Twenty-first Century Learning, when used in combination with standards-based content, ensures that
students are prepared for success in today’s challenging environment. In this course, students will
conclude with an examination of contemporary global issues. In this unit, students will examine the
relationships of the past to the present, solve challenging, authentic problems, accept the
responsibility of supporting a group by improving their own skill sets, identify interdisciplinary
connections, and utilize technology to solve problems.
At course end, students will be able to recognize the presence of the global community that includes
all peoples on earth. The World Studies course will provide a vehicle for the students to understand
how they are an integral part of this community and how the world community evolved over time.
Students will be required to produce a research paper / project for all levels of World Studies.
Materials/Supplies -
Throughout the year bring your charged iPad every day. I will provide you with a physical book as well as a PDF copy, so you do not need to bring the physical book to class. On testing days, please make sure you have a pencil. Although not required, we also recommend that you purchase a stylus to use with your iPad; it makes writing much easier.
You are expected to have the following apps for this course:
* Google Drive
* Google Classroom
* Notability
* Google Docs
* Google Sheets
* Google Slides
* iMovie
* Keynote
* Socrative Student
* NearPod
*Zoom
Grading Policy -
Graded assignments include:
• homework,
• tests and quizzes,
• projects (presentations, essays, etc.)
Marking period grades are calculated by adding the total number of points the student
earned/ by the total number of possible points. For example: if you have earned 400
points out of 500 your grade would be 400/500 which is 80% (B-).
There will be enough opportunities to achieve success during each marking period, so no
extra credit assignments will be offered.
Homework Policy -
Homework is graded; therefore it is very important that you complete it! Homework is
not accepted late as we usually go over the assignment in class. However, if you pay
attention, complete the homework during class and submit it through Google Classroom,
you may receive half credit for the late assignment. This should be an
exception, because otherwise you will have only a 50% homework average.
If you are absent when homework is assigned, you must still complete the assignment.
All homework will be posted on Mr. Klein’s website calendar and through Google Classroom. Any required documents will be posted in Google Classroom. Therefore, it is your responsibility to complete assignments you have either misplaced or missed when absent (including
band/voice lessons, field trips, etc.). If the work is completed in Notability, make sure it is submitted as a PDF or a Google format.
(not a Note file).
Make Up Work -
After a legitimate absence, it is the responsibility of the student to see the teacher
regarding work that was missed and make arrangements with the teacher to complete the work.
• If you are absent one day you have one day to make up the missed work.
• If you are present the day before the test, then absent the day of the test, the test must be taken on the first day you return to school.
• If you miss a test because of a school trip or sports event, the test must be taken after school on the day of the activity or the next day if the activity runs beyond school hours.
Notify me in advance of upcoming trips.
CLASSROOM RULES
Behavior
1. Follow directions the first time they are given.
2. Be in your assigned seat and ready to work when the bell rings.
3. Respect your classmates & teachers by speaking one at a time.
4. Raise your hand and wait to be called upon before responding.
5. Respect yourself and your peers.
6. Do NOT have your phone out during class! It will be taken away if you do so.
7. Do NOT use your iPad for non-class purposes during class time. I use the "Apple Classroom" software to lock your device in the appropriate app. Do NOT attempt to bypass this system through the various methods available. You will be written up immediately if attempt to this!
8. Do NOT bring food or drinks into the classroom. (Students with verified medical excuses are exempt at times.)
9. Do NOT pack up or line up at the door toward the end of the period. I will tell you when class is over.
Attendance & Lateness -
High School policy states that if a student reaches 12 absences, they will lose academic
credit for that class. Three tardies equal one absence.
Tardiness Consequences:
• 1st - Teacher Warning
• 2nd - Teacher Detention
• 3rd - Teacher Detention/Phone Call Home
• 4th - Admin. Write-up
These warnings are cumulative and a student does not start out with a warning each day/time!
Unprepared Students -
Organization is the key to success! Think ahead and always bring your supplies for the
day to class! If you do forget something, you must get a pass from a classroom teacher
to go to your locker. Please don’t make it a habit, otherwise you will lose the privilege
and perhaps even lose credit for any forgotten assignments.
Leaving the Room -
During class, a student may need to leave the room to go see the nurse or go to the
bathroom. Please wait until a time when teachers are not directly instructing and
directions have been given, in order to ask for a pass. This should only be done when
absolutely necessary. Bathroom breaks need to be taken in between classes.
You could also lose this privilege if you ask too often.
