Music is an essential component of a well-rounded educational curriculum. The opportunity to create, perform, respond to, and connect with music ensures that a student will experience learning by means of implementing visual, aural, and kinesthetic skills. Interest in music must be encouraged and nurtured within the school environment so that students have a safe space to freely experiment with this unique art form.
The Grade 7 Music Elective provides learning opportunities that support musical
growth, and the ability to be expressive and creative, as well as demonstrate an understanding of appreciation for diversity- across musical genres, and even more importantly, across world cultures. The course will foster skills that enhance social, academic, and behavioral awareness.
The Grade 7 Music Elective is a nine-week course that is designed to help students increase their awareness of music as an art form and understand how music and the arts are involved in their daily lives.
By the end of the course, students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the elements of music through critical listening, movement, performance, composition, discussion, and written work. After exploring the evolution of music over time, as well as delving into musical theater, students will have fostered an appreciation for music as a unique opportunity for creativity and emotional expression.
Assignments for this course include the completion of various in-class materials, and any other supplemental assignments such as in-class group and solo performances, written and verbal musical analyses and discussions, as well as the creation of compositions to demonstrate an understanding of pitch, rhythm, meter, texture, form, and timbre.
