Course Description
Students explore their creativity through the use of a digital camera and learn skills to capture unique and artistic images. Students become familiar with the various features and functions of digital cameras such as aperture, exposure, ISO, white balance, and focus to take visually appealing photos. Students learn how to apply the principles of composition including framing and symmetry in their photography. Students will experiment with lighting and be able to work with different lighting arrangements. They will practice using photo editing software to further enhance and manipulate their images. Students will have the opportunity to capture portraits, landscapes and nature scenes while learning about various art techniques and genres.
Grading and Evaluation
Portfolios containing all class work will be due at the end of the course. Grading will be based on the following criteria: execution and technique, improvement, effort, composition and design, creativity, personal expression, and assignments.

Attendance
Students are expected to be in class on time. A student is considered late if he/she is not in class ready to learn when the bell rings. In the event of chronic tardiness to class, a corrective action plan in consultation with the student’s parent/guardian and designed to address patterns of excessive tardies will be created.
The consequences of being late are shown in the list below:
1st Offense: Teacher Warning
2nd Offense: Teacher Detention
3rd Offense: Teacher Detention/Phone call Home
4th Offense & Beyond: Discipline Referral for each offense
*Every 3rd late arrival to class equals one unexcused absence.
Units
1. Practice with Pixels
Students get acquainted with digital cameras and the various functions and settings used to capture images. Students will review and understand composition techniques of photography. Students will practice using these techniques to take landscapes, portraits and more.
2. Exploring Art History Though Digital Tools: Surrealism
Students are introduced to the thought-provoking world of Surrealism and explore how it can be creatively applied to digital photography. Students will learn about the key characteristics, artists, and themes of Surrealism, and then use digital photography as a medium to create their own contemporary Surrealism inspired pieces. Students practice exercises to improve technical skills in capturing images and gain proficiency in using editing software, and digital manipulation techniques.
3. Exploring Art History Though Digital Tools: Pop Art
Students are introduced to the exciting world of Pop Art and explore how it can be creatively applied to digital photography. Students will learn about the key characteristics, artists, and themes of Pop Art, and use digital photography as a medium to create their own contemporary Pop Art-inspired pieces. Students will complete practice exercises to improve technical skills in capturing images and gain proficiency in using editing software, and digital manipulation techniques.
4. Portfolio & Presentations
In this unit, students will learn how to showcase their art by creating well-structured portfolios and practice their presentation skills. Students will have the opportunity to select and organize their best digital photographs and be able to create a portfolio that reflects their unique vision and talent.
