The Art of Debate is a nine-week Elective that guides students through the process of identifying, analyzing, evaluating, and synthesizing resources, while determining the validity of sources and applying critical thinking skills through problem-based learning. Students will be exposed to various forms of informational texts while learning techniques for extracting key details and organizing them for use in either written or oral debate formats. For the research portion of the course, emphasis will be placed on honing detailed research skills, including global awareness topics, inclusion of diverse cultures and voices, and students’ personalized areas of interest. For the debate portion, students will identify techniques for preparing successful arguments and utilize those arguments to strengthen their own presentation skills.
