The vast majority of our planet is covered with water. Despite its vastness, comparatively little is known about the various marine environments. Students will begin by examining the smallest of marine life, microbes, and move on to understand the roles of primary producers, invertebrates all the way up to the largest of the marine reptiles and mammals. Students will look at the interdependence of all these organisms and the roles they play in various types of marine ecosystems. Students will also be introduced to the evolutionary history and importance of the marine ecosystems. Threaded throughout all the units in this course will be the examination of how humans have had an impact on our oceans, including climate change and pollution, and how those human impacts on our oceans might affect other aspects of life on earth, and what our future oceans might look like.
