North Pocono elementary schools use a reading series published by McGraw-Hill called "Wonders." The series comes with a companion website full of additional learning aids and opportunities. You can access McGraw-Hill by accessing it through the student portal at https://student.npsd.org. Encompassed in our Wonders series are reading skills, vocabulary, grammar skills, and spelling.
Nothing helps students to become better readers more than practice. Because of that, students will be expected to read each week for at least 20 minutes per day for at least five out of the seven days in a week. I will monitor your child's nightly reading progress each day.
An important part of learning to read is building vocabulary. All vocabulary is taught in the context of the stories we read as part of our reading class so that students have a context for understanding new words. To help students practice with the new vocabulary, resources for studying vocabulary are available in McGraw-Hill's online system, which students can access from their portal at https://student.npsd.org.
Language skills don't stop at learning to read. Students must also learn to write and to write correctly. To do so, students must learn the structure and rules of our admittedly complex English language. Grammar skills give students the ability to write clear, complete, and properly expressed ideas. To help students practice the grammar skills acquired during each unit, resources for studying grammar are available in McGraw-Hill's online system, which students can access from their portal at https://student.npsd.org.
The final topic that we cover in our ELA curriculum is spelling. Students learn to spell common words with increasing difficulty throughout the year. This helps students to write fluently so that, while composing, they do not need to stop every few words to check the proper spelling of a word. To help students practice the weekly spelling words, resources for studying spelling are available in McGraw-Hill's online system, which students can access from their portal at https://student.npsd.org.
