How We Protect Your Child’s Data and Privacy When Using AI Tools

As artificial intelligence (AI) and digital tools become an increasingly valuable part of modern education, our school district remains dedicated to creating a safe, effective, and secure learning environment for all students. We recognize that with new technology comes the responsibility to safeguard student privacy and personal data.

We want to share the rigorous guidelines and safety measures we enforce before any AI or online educational tool enters our classrooms.

Our Core Data Privacy & Security Commitments

1. Strict Multi-Phase Vetting Process
   Every software application, cloud platform, and AI tool must go through a comprehensive review covering legal compliance, data security, educational value, and accessibility before receiving approval for classroom use.

2. Your Child’s Data Is Never Used to Train AI Models
   A mandatory requirement for vendor approval is an explicit guarantee that student data, work, and prompts will never be used to train, retrain, or improve foundational AI models. Your child’s ideas and assignments remain their own.

3. No Unnecessary Personal Information Collected
   We strictly adhere to federal and state privacy laws (including FERPA, COPPA, and PPRA). Tools are evaluated to ensure they do not require unnecessary Personally Identifiable Information (PII). Whenever PII is required—even basic information like student names or IDs—we require vendors to sign a formal Data Sharing Agreement (DSA) to safeguard that data. Additionally, where logins are necessary, we utilize centralized Single Sign-On (SSO) systems so students never create independent accounts or expose private credentials.

4. Data Encryption and Safe Storage
   Approved vendors must guarantee robust encryption of student data both in transit and at rest. Furthermore, vendors are required to permanently delete student data within 30 to 60 days following contract completion.

5. Age-Appropriate Safeguards and Content Filtering
   Generative AI platforms approved for student use must include verified content filtering to prevent exposure to harmful or inappropriate materials. For students under 13 years old, parental consent protocols and strict age restrictions are actively enforced.

6. AI Complements—Never Replaces—Human Teachers
   AI tools in our district serve to support instruction, encourage critical analysis, and personalize learning. They are never used as a replacement for high-quality teaching or for sole grading and student evaluation.
