For those families who are new to our High School, we are so hopeful that we can open our doors and invite you in to our Open House soon. Those who are old hats at this High School parenting know that Open House is an evening where you get the unique opportunity to experience your child's day by following their schedule and visiting the rooms they spend their days in. Heading "back to school" to run through your child's schedule sometimes gives parents and families a whole new understanding as you try to navigate the halls (where student ambassadors kindly show you the way). Teachers give information, quizzes, advice, and an overview of what your child will be learning in a mere ten minute "class". It truly is one of our favorite nights, and though we are doing things (all things) a bit differently this year, I hope you will help me keep one of my time honored traditions.
Each year, I ask parents to do two things: read along with your children... experience To Kill a Mockingbird again, travel to Verona with us to fall in love with Romeo and Juliet, follow a King dressed in borrowed robes onto the battlefield with Macbeth. Let me know if you would like resources sent to you to help with those literary adventures. There is nothing quite like reading with your child, and it allows them to feel that we are in this together.
Second, I always ask parents at Open House to share something with me that I wouldn't guess or be told about their child. Answers over the years have ranged from "He/She loves Hamilton and sings at the top of her lungs in the car before we get to school" to "he/she loves reading but doesn't have time to do it anymore" to "he's/she's a perfectionist and is really nervous about getting things right in your class".
Thank you so very much, I look forward to working with your families this year. Please reach out if there is anything I might do to make your child's experience in English a wonderful one this year.
