About Our School

Welcome to the Dr. William H. Horton Elementary School website. It is our pleasure to share events happening at our school with all stakeholders who are helping to make a difference in the lives of approximately 810 students who are under our care. The information and activities found on our website are intended to serve as a tool for parents, students, teachers, and community members to gain greater insight into the wealth of programs being offered at our school. We also view this site as a vehicle to establish stronger communication among the school, home and community-at-large.

Dr. William H. Horton Elementary School is one of the most densely populated schools in the North Ward. We serve children from grades kindergarten all the way through eighth grade and we are excited to welcome our first class of preschool students in the fall of 2021. We are proud to have the largest population of students in self-contained Learning Disabled Mild classrooms as well as the largest population of Spanish speaking bilingual students in the North Ward of Newark.

Our staff, students and administrators have focused heavily on bringing the most innovative educational technology into the classroom to help prepare our students for 21st century college and career ventures. Dr. Horton’s programs seek to create a developmentally appropriated setting where children are able to grow academically, socially, and emotionally. We feel that it is vital that we encourage respect for the individuality of each child. Every child has gifts and talents that must be explored and nurtured so that each child feels like a valued member of our school community. It is through collaboration and commitment that much can be accomplished. We believe in every student we teach and we fully understand that students, staff, and community members encounter opportunities for learning everyday.

Parents are proud to have their children attend Dr. Horton because of its dedicated and welcoming environment. Come to Dr. William H. Horton School on any day and you will find a school truly preparing its students to meet the needs of the 21st century within the community and world wide.

At Dr. Horton, we give hope to all who enter our doors, develop the skills our students need to achieve success, and ignite the dreams of future leaders.
