5th Grade
11 things Compositions
This lesson is all about composition. Students learn about scale, repetition, emphasis, balance, intersecting and overlapping, color and shading. They must include a prescribed list of 11 items in their piece. Those items can be any size and in any quantity and can interact with each other in any way the artist chooses. They are encouraged to have objects bleed off the paper and to use a lot of color. The 5th graders worked very hard on these beautiful pieces.

Paper Quilt squares inspired by the quilters of Gees Bend
The quilts of Gees Bend Alabama first exploded onto the art scene several years back. A small hamlet in Alabama, Gees Bend residents were primarily descendants of slaves. The tradition of quilting was practiced and passed down through generations of women in the community. Their quilts are made from old clothes and textiles that were on hand. They are amazing in their simplicity and imperfect patterns, and their utilitarian origins. 5th graders had to pretend they were using textiles and they added stitches with Sharpie markers to look more authentic. I am thrilled to include more black and brown artists in my curriculum and will continue to introduce more diverse artists to the art program every year.

Day of the Dead Skull prints and radial design backgrounds
5th graders designed a Day of the Dead Skull inspired by the Mexican holiday that honors and celebrates departed loved ones. They drew their designs in styrofoam for printing and made many prints. They chose the best one to place on a background and their backgrounds had to show an understanding of a radial design.
The backgrounds are also inspired by the decorative Day of the Dead motifs.
