ARTIST STATEMENT BY SAMI REILLY, NPHS CLASS OF 2020

What art means to me. Throughout my life taking photos was something I loved to do. Whether it was on my mom’s flip phone or my grandmother’s old camera, I always took photos. When my grandmother got sick, taking photos meant the world to me. We always took photos together, it was a way to capture all the time we spent together. I didn’t realize till a few years ago that capturing all those moments really meant something to me. That is when I decided to go into photography. I would look up photos of weddings and graduations, enjoying all the candids of people smiling and having a good time. It was then that I knew I wanted to capture these moments for others. So I started taking photos at my cousin's birthdays and family gathering but it didn’t give me as much joy as I thought it would, nor did I have enough time to go through and edit all of these when I had football practice. So one day after school, I brought my camera out on the field. Seeing how excited those boys got when they realized they would have action shots from practicing helped me choose what I wanted to do. Sports photography. Everyone relates to sports in some way and the moments that you could capture would live on forever. The photos after the game-winning goal or the pitcher’s relief after a long-awaited no-hitter. These moments meant a lot to many people, myself included. Moments like those, special ones, is how I relate to art. It is what keeps me happy, it is what gives art meaning to me. What art means to me. It means you can capture moments forever, moments that mean the world to you.
