*I Can not guarantee the type of calculator your son/daughter will receive the day of the Keystone Exams. A Graphing calculator will be extensively used in this course and will be used to help supplement the understanding of the concepts taught in this course. It is not meant to replace the pure mathematical operations for your son/daughter will need to be successful in later courses, rather it is there to help solidify their understanding. Below are my recommendations for calculators if you were interested in purchasing one for your son/daughter.
#1 Graphing Calculator: Ti-Nspire CX is the version that I recommend because of its many capabilities and ease of use in higher order computations compared to older versions of Ti Calculators.
*Please be aware there are two versions of the Ti-Nspire, The Ti-Nspire CX CAS version is not allowed to be used on the Keystone exam. The accepted version is the Ti-Nspire CX.
#2 Graphing Calculator: Ti-84 Plus, this is still a good calculator but it is not as powerful or as user friendly as the Ti-Nspire CX. The Ti-84 Plus also does not come with a color screen and does lack some key features that the Ti-Nspire CX has.
#3 Scientific Calculator: Ti-36x Pro, this is a powerful calculator that I highly recommend if you are not going to purchase a graphing calculator. This calculator has a good amount of the features that a graphing calculator, but does have its limits. As for a basic calculator that is extremely user friendly this is the one I recommend. It is much more powerful than the Ti-30 XII.
In addition, please be aware that while North Penn has chosen to use the TI family of calculators, students are under no obligation to purchase this specific TI product. Students may chose to use whichever calculator brand they wish but with the understanding that while our math teachers will do their very best to assist any student with the operation of their specific calculator, they may or may not be able to answer questions about operations on non TI calculators.
