Steps for Musical Success
1. Attend lessons every week. While the lesson time changes every week, the day to bring the instrument to school usually remains the same. Lessons will be on a Monday through Friday schedule. Occasionally assemblies, holidays, or early dismissals affect the lesson day.
2. Practice AT LEAST 10-15 minutes a day, 6-7 days a week. As their playing ability becomes more advanced, students will need to spend more time practicing the music. It is best to establish a similar time each day - i.e. before school, after school, or after dinner. It may help to tie practicing into homework time.
3. Practice in a place that is free of distractions like other children playing, a TV, or a video game. ALL students need to use a music stand that is adjusted to eye level.
4. KEEP TRYING...Initially students will be learning the basic operation of the instrument and tone production. Don't expect instant results - no beginner can play melodies. No matter how strange those initial sounds may seem to you, find something that you can do well, like posture/ playing position, tone, effort, etc… and most importantly, KEEP TRYING! This is especially important after the “newness” of the instrument wears off.
5. Treat the instrument with care. Too often children spin them like batons, drop them, drag the case on the floor, or sit on the case.
