Lessons:
Strings classes take place twice per week during the school day for 30 minutes. Lesson times rotate so that students do not always have lessons at the same time each day.
Classes will begin in October.
Students leave class with their regular teacher to attend strings in a small group. Students are held responsible for their own schedule, work and attendance.
Students are expected to practice their homework to improve their skills on their instrument.
Parent encouragement:
Students will need encouragement from their adults at home in order to be successful. Encourage your child to practice daily and show you what they are learning!
Encourage your child to play their instrument for family and friends.
Home practice is necessary for your child to be successful on their instrument. Recommended practice is at least 15 minutes, 4-5 days per week.
Instruments:
Select from VIOLIN, VIOLA, CELLO or STRING BASS.
Instruments can be rented through Zeswitz Music Company. Rentals include maintenance, repairs, size exchanges, and even complete replacements if the instrument cannot be repaired. We recommend that all beginners rent an instrument. Your rental payments go towards eventual ownership of a full-sized instrument!
See the chart below to measure your child before renting the instrument.
Zeswitz offers 2 levels of instruments - Enhanced and Deluxe. Each has specific features.
If are not able to rent, Scholarship instruments are available. Please ask me. cohenms@npenn.org
Many instruments can be purchased cheaply online, but these instruments are not suitable for strings class. They have a scratchy or metallic tone, they do not stay in tune, and they will cause your child much frustration, potentially discouraging them from playing. We want your child to have the best possible start, and the best way to do that is to rent a high quality instrument.
Definitely do not purchase any colorful, painted instruments. These are fun to look at, but they are poor quality and not suitable for strings class.
If you are NOT renting from Zeswitz Music (providing your own instrument or purchasing one), please contact Mrs. Cohen (cohenms@npenn.org) to check for size and playability as soon as possible.
Accessories:
Please make sure your instrument rental order includes an Essential Elements book 1 and music stand. An Everest Shoulder Rest is requested for all students.
Shipping:
Zeswitz will bring the instrument to the school for free.
