June 13, 2024 Lunch Menu Week # 4 June 17-19, 2024 - Last week of school!
Dear Elementary Parents and Community,
Seeing you at our recent spring performances this week was wonderful. I am grateful for Ms. Aneta and Ms. Andrijana our Music and Dance teachers! Music and dancing bring such good energy and our students benefit from it immensely. Tomorrow, Friday, is our last spring performance for our early learners and will take place from 2:00-3:00. Next week our highlight takes place on Tuesday with the second annual staff vs student football game. After students play they will be treated with some ice cream. Students will play for just ten minutes so they will not be negatively impacted by the heat. Please double-check that they come to school with a water bottle.
As we close out the school year, I would like to let you know some important August dates.
August 19 - New Family Orientation
August 20 - First day of school for grades KG-GR 5 and Meet & Greet
August 21-23 - Preschool Parent Connection Meetings
Fifth Graders Shared Their PYP Exhibition Projects
The PYP Exhibition is a culminating event in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP), where students engage in a collaborative, in-depth inquiry into real-world issues or topics of personal interest. The focus was on the unit Sharing the Planet. Typically taking place in the final year of the PYP, this exhibition allows students to demonstrate their understanding of the PYP’s transdisciplinary themes and the IB learner profile attributes. Throughout the process, students develop critical skills such as research, communication, and self-management, while also reflecting on their learning journey. The exhibition involves extensive planning, investigation, and presentation, often incorporating various forms of media and creative expressions. It serves not only as a comprehensive assessment of the student's learning but also as a celebration of their growth and readiness for the next phase of their education. Nova's fifth graders selected topics like gender equality, sustainable cities, and wellness and well-being. They orally presented their learning to parents and other students.
Report cards will be sent home tomorrow. Should you have questions or concerns about the marks, please contact your child's classroom teacher. I wish you a nice weekend.
Warm regards,
Julie A. Cox

Dear Elementary Parents and Community,
I hope this message finds you well. As we count down the days until the end of the school year, I’d like to point out the list of important dates and events coming our way. Please see the list of events below. I would love to see you all attend the fun and celebrations! Also, featured in this week’s newsletter is information about the child protection curriculum units we use to teach in each grade level. Keeping our students safe is our number one priority. Please note that school will be closed on Friday, May 24.
Teacher Appreciation Day - May 31
We will celebrate Teacher Appreciation Day on May 31. The PTA is planning to host a brunch for teachers. It would be wonderful if you could ask your child(ren) to write a thank you note or draw a picture for their teacher and present it on May 31.
Fifth Graders Moving Up to Sixth Grade - The secondary team will host a parent coffee for this year’s fifth-grade parents. This meeting will be held on May 31 from 8:15-9:15 in the new secondary school cafeteria. In addition, the fifth graders will meet with the LSS (Lower Secondary School) Counselor, Mr. James Villers.
Child Protection Units of Study
To help make our school safe and supportive, we are using the Second Step Child Protection Unit. In these lessons, students will learn three types of skills at an age-appropriate level:
Personal Safety. Students will learn important rules of safety, such as safety with sharp objects and fire, and when riding on wheels or in cars. They will also learn ways to help them decide if something is safe or not.
Safe Touch. Students will learn about safe, unsafe, and unwanted touch, and rules about touching private body parts. They’ll also learn to say no to unsafe or unwanted touch and to tell an adult if someone breaks the rules about touching private body parts.
Assertiveness. These lessons will also allow students to practice asking an adult for help, telling an adult about an unsafe touch, and being assertive to get out of unsafe situations.
These skills will also be reinforced through our counseling lessons.
To keep your child safe and protected, everyone needs to be involved. Nova International School has a Child Protection and Safeguarding statement and a policy. Additionally, all staff are trained yearly in matters related to Child Protection and Safeguarding such as:
Recognize and report suspected child abuse
Respond to and support children who have been abused or who are facing other challenges
Use strategies to promote a safe and supportive school climate
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me: jana.shishkovska@nova.edu.mk
Toys and Cell Phones
Please remember that cell phones, toys, and trading cards are not permitted at school. We feel these items will distract students from their learning and may get lost or stolen.
Puppies Need A Home
Six puppies were left in one of our families' yards and they need homes. If you are interested in having a new puppy, please contact Fleur at 070 290 326 or Melita at 071 249 677.

Annual School Climate Survey
Each year we send out a school climate survey to parents, students (GR 5 and up), and staff. We want to hear from you! We know that you have unique insights into your child’s experience within the school environment and that you can provide us with feedback on various aspects of the school climate such as safety, communication, inclusivity, and academic quality. The school leadership team uses this information to help us determine our strengths as well as find areas for improvement. We do this because we value your input as partners between the family and school. We ask that you please take a few minutes to complete this survey, linked here: LINK.
Student-Led Conferences - Thursday, May 9 from 9:00-5:00
Elementary student-led conferences are a format for parent-teacher conferences where students actively present their progress and achievements to you. Rather than the traditional model where teachers discuss the student's performance with parents, students lead the discussion in student-led conferences.
In these conferences, students will showcase their work, reflect on their learning experiences, set goals, and discuss their strengths and areas for improvement. They will present their portfolios that include examples of their achievements and discuss their learning journey. Agency (student choice) is a big part of the PYP. Students were able to select the items in their portfolios. Teachers will be present to offer guidance and support, but the focus is on empowering students to take ownership of their education and develop important skills such as communication, reflection, and goal-setting. We have decided to use this same format for even our youngest students, our preschoolers.
More information and signups will be forthcoming.

Third-Grade Experience with The Dimitar Vlahov State School for the Visually Impaired
As part of the PYP unit, How We Express Ourselves, the third graders had the opportunity to visit and participate in an art education class in Dimitar Vlahov, the State School for Visually Impaired Children and Youth - Skopje. During the joint activity, students created art projects, through which they became familiar with the educational goals that help their more/less developed senses. Together, we discovered the advantages of diversity and the challenges that helped us all set new goals. We all got to spend a wonderful two hours filled with children's love, cooperation, exchange of information, and above all wonderful communication.
Kindergartens Explore Foods from the Past and Present
In the PYP unit, Where We Are in Place and Time, the students showed their learning about foods from the past and present. They asked their grandparents about how they would get their food, favorite desserts, and what they ate when they were 5 and 6 years old.
Through a hands-on experience, the kindergarteners made their own pizzas. They talked about the ingredients, made the dough, and formed it into round shapes. Of course, the project culminated with eating the fruits of their labor! Cooking can help young children learn and practice basic math concepts and build language skills. Nova kindergarteners were very excited and motivated to explain their favorite toppings and what they could cook in their homes.
With that, I wish you a wonderful spring break. We look forward to welcoming your children back on Monday, April 15. Please see the list of important dates and events below.
Warm regards,
Julie A. Cox

March 23, 2024 Lunch Menu Week # 3 April 1-5, 2024
Dear Elementary Parents and Community,
Last week we had the pleasure of welcoming one of Macedonia's Greatest Musical Talents, Guitar Player Vlatko Stefanovski, Our fifth graders were amazed and impressed!
Eager to learn, the students bombarded him with questions, drawing from his extensive experience as a professional musician and his role in co-founding the renowned jazz-rock band "Leb i Sol." They were curious about his experiences performing for large audiences, the size of his instrument collection, and his creative process. Stefanovski's responses were nothing short of captivating. At the age of 19, inspired by The Beatles' "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" and the music of the 1960s, he embarked on his musical journey with the formation of "Leb i Sol." Despite over 50 years of professional music career, he still approaches music with the enthusiasm of a child, believing that it's never too late to create something beautiful.
"Music is a combination of frequencies and resonances that fashions an almost mystical experience," he said, adding that this art form carries a potent emotional value. He stressed the primacy of emotions over intellect in music, detailing his creative process involving spontaneous improvisation and the search for meaningful chords. While he modestly refrained from labeling himself a composer, Stefanovski's musical contributions extend beyond performance, encompassing compositions for various media, including films, theater, television, and ballet. Notably, he shared his fondness for drums while boasting a collection of over 50 instruments in his studio. Students performed the iconic "Skopje'' song at the end before rushing in to get his autograph.
This visit served as a motivation for learning within the "How We Express Ourselves" unit, inspiring students to explore musical expression through composing melodies and writing lyrics across different genres. Thank you Vlatko for this great visit! It is highly appreciated. I thank our Music Teacher, Ms. Aneta who invited him to Nova.
Battle of the Books Reading Competition
After months of reading and studying a selection of young-adult novels, 28 third-fifth graders competed in the "Battle of the Books"! This is a reading invective program. Students worked in teams of three to demonstrate their abilities and to test their knowledge of the books. The competition was structured similarly to a TV game show. The students did a fabulous job and each received a certificate. This program will take place next year with new titles.
Counselor Corner
During the last unit of our social-emotional learning program, Second Step, students have been learning how to problem solve. The goal of this unit is for students to learn how to apply their emotional management and communication skills to solve interpersonal problems and demonstrate strategies for effectively dealing with interpersonal conflict. fPlease take a look at the grade-specific topic covered and ideas for at-home reinforcement activities:
The current unit is on problem solving bullying. Through the counselor visit we have also touched on important topics such as Diversity and celebrating differences. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me: jana.shishkovska@nova.edu.mk
I'll leave you with some pictures from our recent school spirit day CRAZY HAIR DAY followed by a list of important spring dates and events.
Warm regards,
Julie A. Cox

During yesterday's staff meeting, I had the chance to share some of my learnings with the elementary teachers. The topic I shared is called, Universally Designed Lessons. Using these techniques, we keep a close focus on ensuring that students have full access and are engaged in the learning.
Tomorrow is CRAZY HAIR DAY in the elementary! Children will show their school spirit by making their hair a bit crazy! One more quick reminder, if you are willing to showcase your profession/career with ES students, please fill out the Google Form below. Children are never too young to start thinking of future passions.
Enjoy the rest of this gorgeous spring day!
Warm regards,
Julie A. Cox

Dear Elementary Parents and Community,
I hope this message finds you well. As we continue to foster a nurturing and inclusive environment for all our students, I want to take a moment to remind everyone of our school's values: DIVERSITY, INTEGRITY, COLLABORATION, BALANCE, and EMPATHY.
At Nova, we are committed to providing a safe and respectful space where every individual feels welcome, valued, and honored. We believe in the strength of diversity and the importance of mutual respect among all members of our school community.
The use of derogatory or discriminatory language is unacceptable and can perpetuate harm. I urge you to have open conversations with your children about the significance of respectful language and the impact of hurtful words. We must instill in our students a deep understanding of the value of diversity and the importance of treating others with kindness and empathy.
Thank you for your cooperation and ongoing commitment to creating a welcoming environment for all. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of our students and build a stronger, more inclusive community.

Art Exhibit ES Auditorium
In the unit of study, Who We Are, students made the connection between art ideas/artworks with societal understanding as they created exciting abstract art inspired by avant-garde artist Yayoi Kusama.
Art idea: The Dot/We continue with the discovery of the meaning of diversity. The student project stretched over three different phases, through which students had to describe themselves as an individual and part of a group to a community.
Students also learned about 2D and 3D shapes, as evidenced in the art display.
Elementary Students Showed Their School Spirit on Pajama Day!
Elementary students both young and old fully embraced Friday's Nova Spirt Day.

Kindergarten
Kindergarteners embarked on their third unit of inquiry, focusing on Where We Are in Place and Time. Students shared carefully curated boxes of artifacts from different eras, both past and present, prepared with the help of their grandparents and parents. The children were excited as they delved into the past through music cassettes, videos, CDs, cameras, handmade baby clothing, dolls, and even a vintage cassette player brought in by some students. Together, they enjoyed playing with toys both inside and outside the class, witnessing the evolution of photographs in terms of color and style. Their next steps involve researching schools and toys, exploring changes from the past to the present and even envisioning their future transformations. We are fortunate to have supportive parents who play an integral role in fostering a love for learning both at home and in school.
Fourth Grade Market Place
The fourth graders organized and ran a marketplace as their summative project for their unit, How We Organize Ourselves. They were tasked to work in teams to plan, design, and create a small business. Each team created 2-3 products and had to choose their prices based on what they had studied about supply & demand/needs & wants. The customers were Grade 4 parents along with Grade 3 and Grade 5 students. The students raised 28,513 denars which will all be donated to a charity of their choice. After studying different organizations, they chose the Red Cross/Red Crescent as their organization this year. The students were very excited and well-organized for this event. It was a great success!

Dear Elementary School Parents and Community,
Greetings as we step into February! I trust you had the opportunity to review your child's report card last week. Should you have any questions or comments, please feel free to connect with your child's teacher or the specialist educators.
We're delighted to observe an increasing number of students arriving at school equipped with their Student ID Cards. Your ongoing support is truly appreciated! Additionally, we've noticed a positive decrease in the presence of football shoes (cleats) in the Elementary School. This is fantastic news, and I extend my gratitude for your cooperation in this matter.
As we approach Valentine's Day, an exciting event awaits your children, organized by the PTA. For further details, please refer to the complete newsletter accessible through the link below.
Valentine’s Day Celebration - A PTA Sponsored Event!
Students in kindergarten through fifth grade will participate in a fun event that will share the love this Valentine’s Day! Each class will have a set time to attend between 8:00 am - 2:00 pm. If you want to join in the fun, check the time with your child’s homeroom teacher.
Make a Card Table: A table (located in the ES auditorium) for students with markers, stickers, and glitter to make personalized Valentine's Day cards for their friends and family.
Sweet Treats Market: Tables with a variety of sweets, cookies, and heart-shaped lollipops will be available for purchase in the ES auditorium.
All items will be priced at a maximum of 150 MKD.
Nova Astro Tickets
Has your son or daughter come home talking about getting an ASTRO TICKET? These little tickets are positive reinforcements that students receive when they are “caught modeling excellence”! At Nova, we want to emphasize the positive!
Arrival and Dismissal
To orchestrate a smooth arrival and dismissal at the EEC door, please drop your child off at the door in the morning rather than taking them inside the building. We want the children to be more independent when they hang up their coats and get ready for the day. During dismissal time, you can help by having your child's number clearly visible to those on duty. Thank you for your support.

First graders gathered this week for a culminating celebration on their unit How We Express Ourselves. During the unit, they were exposed to a variety of ways to tell stories: hand puppets, plays, clay animation, pop animation, shadow puppets, skits, and more. They got to choose which medium they would use to write and produce a story of their own. Working in groups they displayed their knowledge of how to collaborate, communicate, and problem-solve. On their own, they created the sets and scenes for the plays, props costumes, and more. The unit was celebrated yesterday by having students watch all the different expressions of storytelling. It was delightful!
ES Spirit Day - Pajama Day - February 9

Counselor Corner
During the last unit of our social-emotional learning program, Second Step, students have been learning how to recognize kindness and act kindly. They have also learned about empathy and taking others’ perspectives. Recognizing kind acts and empathy are important elements of building and maintaining relationships. Please take a look at the grade-specific topic covered and ideas for at-home reinforcement activities:
The next unit is on Problem-solving. If you have any questions please do not hesitate our ES Counselor at jana.shishkovska@nova.edu.mk

Dear Elementary Parents and Community,
I hope this note finds you well. Semester I report cards will be emailed to you later today. You may access them via your email account. We hope you see these reports as a celebration of your child’s growth and success! Since our next round of parent/teacher conferences will not take place until March, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s classroom or specialty teachers if you want to meet up to discuss the progress of your child.
This past Monday, January 22, marked the first day of the second semester, which brings new units of study and activities. We hope you can join us for our upcoming ES Guest Reader Event!
ES Guest Reader Read Aloud Week - February 12-16
To nurture students’ love for reading and build our NOVA community, we are inviting YOU, parents, to come in and read to your child’s class. You can choose a picture book of your choice or the teacher can help you find a good book. Our Librarians Ms. Sonja and Ms. Ana have hand-picked some special choices. You can read in your home language or in English (which may be your home language). This event will take place the week of February 12-16. Teachers are looking for at least one parent reader each day. Get ready to join us for a full week of excitement as we celebrate the joy of reading! Please contact your child’s homeroom teacher if you can come in and read aloud a picture book. This is a thrilling event for students and parents alike!
Student ID Cards
A second friendly reminder that all students in EEC and ES need to enter and exit the building using their student ID cards. Please make sure your child(ren) can locate their card. As per last week’s message, this has to do with security and knowing who is in the building in the event of an emergency. I still notice some students coming to campus without their cards and trying to climb under the security gate. Please get your replacement cards ordered if you need to. Thank you!
Football Cleats
Students are not permitted to wear football/soccer cleats (shoes) to school. It is too easy for them to accidentally hurt themselves or someone else.
Indoor Shoes
Please make certain that your child has a dedicated pair of “indoor shoes” that stay at school all year. These do not need to be new shoes, just dry, clean, and comfortable shoes. They will wear these in dance, PE, and inside the classroom if it’s muddy outside. Please double-check with your son/daughter, as they might have outgrown their shoes since the beginning of the year. Thank you!
Featured Learning
In the first grade integrated unit 'How We Express Ourselves', the Central idea is 'Stories can be expressed and interpreted in many ways'. They are learning that we can express our stories through music, dance, body movements, gestures, mimics, crafts, technology, etc. First graders have been exploring stories and the elements that all the stories have (characters, setting, problem, solution).
Students were introduced to various ways of how they can express themselves. They had the opportunity to learn more about expression through role-play, puppets, and shadow-theater. The finale of the unit was to watch a professional performance of actors to show our students what a real performance looks like and how actors express themselves. The name of the play was 'Salt is more expensive than Gold' which has a great message, and though it was mostly in Macedonian, the students were able to grasp the core by just looking at the gestures, mimics, and the actors' expressions. The name of their organization is 'Organization for Cultural Motivation - Kulti Vator'.
With this, I wish you a wonderful weekend ahead.
Warm regards,
Julie A. Cox

January 22-26
Dear Elementary Parents and Community,
Welcome to the new year! I trust you had a wonderful time with your family and friends during our three-week holiday from school. The children showed up, albeit sleepy, excited to be back in school and reconnecting with friends. Happy New Year to you all!
Report Cards for the first Semester will be sent home to you on January 25. Information from your child’s progress report will be added to the report card. If you have any questions about the report, please contact your child’s teacher. If you feel the need to meet in person, please don’t hesitate to set up a meeting at school.
Student ID Cards
Students need to enter and exit the building by scanning their Student ID Cards at the turn stalls. This is done for security purposes. We want to know that the people entering NOVA have permission to do so. In addition, we need to know exactly who is in the building in the event of an emergency. Please help your child locate their ID card if they have misplaced it. Children will no longer be able to duck under the bars at the front gate when they enter and exit the building. If they do not have their ID card, they will sign in or out. Please contact Nova Security if your child has misplaced their card so a new one can be made. Thank you for adhering to this policy. If you need to order your child a new ID card, please use this LINK.
MK Mandatory Medical/Dental Check-Ups
Please note that you will soon be receiving an email from the nurse notifying you of mandatory medical and dental check-ups and vaccinations (required for Macedonians only but recommended for all). You will take your child to the Dentski Dispanzer Karposh on the date assigned to you. Students in grades 1-3 and some fourth and fifth graders need to complete these. Please keep an eye on your email inbox for additional information.

Fifth Grade Author's Visit
As part of the 5th-grade unit "How We Express Ourselves", our very own Ms. Jelena Nikodinoska, a published author, delivered a lecture on storytelling as a form of self-expression. Her presentation revolved around the unit’s Central Idea: An author’s background, experience, and cultural perspectives influence their writing. Ms. Nikodinoska discussed different narrative techniques with the students, such as context, point of view, as well as denotation and connotation of words in an interactive way. The students had an opportunity to draw connections to texts covered in their literacy classes, while also posing many curious questions regarding the different stages of the writing process.
With this, I wish you a great weekend ahead.

Student Service Project - We are collecting gently new or used winter coats, scarves, blankets, hats, and mittens!
Three NOVA twelfth graders are engaged in a service learning project to support the children at the Specialized Institute of Demir Kapija . This local school serves elementary children with special needs. Please look through your closets to see if you have gently used (and cleaned) winter coats, blankets, scarves, hats, and/or mittens. Collection bins are located at the entrance to the ES building. Donations will be accepted until December 15. Thank you for your consideration.

Poetry Cafe
Last Friday students in first through fifth grade showcased their poetry skills at an elementary school assembly. Participation was optional and we were proud to have 18 students volunteer. The children delighted us with poems about homework, sisters, school, and family life. We laughed and had a grand time.
Air Quality at Nova
We take great care in ensuring our students' safety and well-being regarding air quality. We install air purification equipment in all classrooms, offices, and public spaces and regularly change the air filters. We have an Air Quality policy, as part of our Student-Parent Handbook, that we rigorously implement. As the heating season brings poor air quality, we begin its implementation from mid-October to mid-March, and this pertains to extracurriculars, not just the regular school day.

Traditional Slovenian Breakfast for Kindergarteners
Last week we had the privilege to have some dignitaries, including the Slovenian Ambassador, at Nova to raise awareness about the importance of bees in the Earth's ecosystem and healthy nutrition. The Slovenian Embassy regularly organizes a Traditional Slovenian Breakfast. Kindergarteners had bread with butter and honey, apples and milk to celebrate the event. Students learned, from a real bee keeper, how bees help the environment and make honey. Everyone had a wonderful time.

NOVA Attendance Policy
Your child’s learning and progress are at the heart of all that we do at NOVA, and we want to make certain that we are working together to find the best possible outcomes for them. With this in mind, we want to be proactive well before reaching the 24 (12 days/semester) day threshold and ensure you have all the information.
Every student is expected to attend school daily unless there is a valid justification for the absence. Extended vacations are not a valid justification for missing school. The yearly school calendar is posted on the NOVA website. Please plan your vacations so they align with the regularly scheduled NOVA school breaks and holidays. If your child is sick, by all means, keep them home.
After School Activities
Trimester II After School Activities (ASAs) will begin the week of November 27. Please look for the sign-up sheets that will be emailed to you next Tuesday, November 21.
MAP Parent Education Coffee
Thank you to those parents who attended last week’s PTA Parent Coffee which focused on interpreting your child’s MAP results. The presentation generated some rich discussions. Please note that MAP scores do not impact a child’s grade in school. I will attach the slideshow for you HERE in the event you weren’t able to attend the presentation.
Poetry Café
Students in first through fifth grade have been invited to participate in our upcoming Poetry Café. Three students from each grade will volunteer to read one of their original poems. The assembly will be held on November 22 from 8:15-9:15 a.m. in the ES/LSS auditorium.
Featured Learning
Third Grade
In the unit, Sharing the Planet, 3rd graders are learning about challenges and risks different kids face worldwide. One of the topics they cover is learning about education around the world and all the unusual schools that exist. Going to Vodno represented the idea of kids who get to walk to school each day through the forest or nature. They “created” a forest school concept at Markovo Kruvche. They combined the idea of ways to get to school and being in an outdoor classroom. The students could reflect on this experience and share their challenges and risks about having school outside. They traveled by bus to Sredno Vodno and walked for 2,5 km to get to Markovo Kruvche. Once there, they were divided into teams and asked to explore materials that they could use to create story characters such as stones, pebbles, sticks, leaves, etc. Then, they used colors to transform these materials into made-up characters and created a story. When done, they shared their stories standing in a big circle. The highlight of their field trip was cleaning up all the trash they found on the way to Markovo Kruvche. Third Grade did an amazing job!
Upcoming Dates
Thanksgiving Holiday - No school November 23-24.
With that, I wish you a good day.

PTA Sponsored Fall Festival
Fall is almost here, and the PTA would like to invite the youngest members of our community to celebrate the season with a Fall Festival on October 27th. As in previous years, the idea for the Fall Festival is to create a memorable day of outdoor activities related to the fall harvest. Costumes are optional. We are recommending the costumes be based on a book character and are comfortable to be able to play outside games in. There should be no masks and no toy weapons. Students can wear a t-shirt with a character or fall theme if they do not want to dress up, and they have the option to not dress up at all.

We strongly encourage all parents to attend parent-teacher conferences on November 1 & 2. School will not be in session. Elementary students typically stay home during conferences. Counselor’s Corner - Jana Shishkovska
Growth Mindset and Goal Setting
During the first unit of SEL (Social Emotional Learning) through the Second Step program and counselor visit, students from K-5 have been learning about the concept of a Growth Mindset and Goal Setting.
Simply put, a growth mindset is believing that your brain can grow, you can learn new things, and mistakes are opportunities to get better at something. On the other hand, a fixed mindset is believing that you cannot learn new things, you are born with knowledge and skills and you are either “good” or “bad” at something.
Research shows that children who have developed a growth mindset are more likely to have higher academic performance, be more open-minded towards new ideas and concepts, have increased resilience when faced with failure or mistakes, have stronger self-esteem, and have better communication and relationships with peers and adults.
For kids to understand this concept it helps to explain that our brain is like a muscle, and just like other muscles in our body, when we exercise our brain it can get bigger and stronger. It is important to use and teach phrases like “I am not able to do this, yet”, “This is hard, but I will try”, and “Mistakes are ok, I can learn from them”. For more age-specific home connections, and how you can encourage a growth mindset in your child/ren, please visit the link of your specific grade levels. For more information or additional support, please do not hesitate to contact me by email: janashishkovska@nova.edu.mk
ES Winter Performance
It has been a long-standing tradition at Nova to host a winter performance extravaganza. This year is no different. It is with great excitement, that we announce this year's winter production of Trolls. The performance will take place in mid-December. Students in grades 1-5 will all be performing.
There are auditions for the major roles. We would like to invite students in grades 3, 4, and 5 to audition for the acting roles in the performance. The roles to be auditioned for are Princess Poppy, Branch, King Gristle, Bridget, Chef, King Peppy, Creek, Satin, and Chenille, (twin Trolls).
Please have a discussion with your child to find out if they are interested! Let them know that there is a time commitment associated with this, as this will be a grand performance that will take place in a local theater. Practice will occur twice a week after school and begin in mid-October. If interested, please sign up for a ten-minute audition time slot. The actual audition will take approximately five minutes. LINK TO SIGN UP.

First Graders Met with Nova community members as part of the Who We Are unit of study. The central idea of this learning is that individuals in the community are all connected and dependent on each other.
Exploring culture allows people to develop their sense of self and make connections with others. Students explored the nature of the self; their beliefs and values; of personal, physical, mental, social, and spiritual health; of their families, friends, communities, and cultures; our rights and responsibilities; of what it means to be human.
With that, I wish you a pleasant week ahead. Please note that school will be closed from October 9-13 for fall break.

Welcoming New Students
This week Ms. Jana, our ES Counselor, sat down for lunch with our new students one grade level at a time. They were super excited! Our goal is for children to have a strong sense of belonging at Nova. Preschoolers had a smooth start to the new year.
Revised Attendance Policy
Importance of Attendance
Being on time and present at school each day is extremely important. The impact on student learning from excessive absenteeism has a cumulative impact on learning. We ask families for their support in making sure that school attendance remains a priority. While every possible allowance is made for students who are absent due to illness, family emergency, religious observance, or participation in a school-sponsored activity, absences resulting from extended vacations and or family trips are inappropriate reasons to miss school. Please attempt to schedule medical appointments outside of the school day. The school offers ample time during vacations throughout the year for family travel, and parents are asked to contact the office as far in advance as possible for a foreseen absence. The school reserves the right to require medical documentation related to student absences.
Elementary Students
Elementary students may not be absent from school for more than 12 days in one semester. Not adhering to this policy could affect the recommendation for a student’s grade promotion or continued enrollment at Nova. ES students should not be late to school more than 5 times each semester.
If a student is absent or late five times in a semester, parents will be notified by me in writing. After ten days absent the ES Counselor will request a meeting with the parents and then work on solutions to solve this attendance problem. It is the parent's responsibility to check Alma regularly to track absences/tardies. We care about your child’s education!
Looking for On-Call Substitute Teachers!
Once again this year we are reaching out to parents to find interested individuals to help us in the Elementary. When teachers are out, we are looking for qualified adults to serve as substitutes. Please use this LINK to let us know if you are interested. Then we will reach out for an interview.
Thank you for considering this. You will find us a fun team to work with!
Replacing NOVA ID Cards
Each day your child should have their NOVA ID badge with them to get in the gate and out of the gate. We track this so that, in the event of an emergency, we know who is in the building and who is not. Any adult (parents, nannies, grandparents, etc.) needing to be on campus will need an ID badge. New families receive their badges upon their arrival. Returning students need to bring their ID badges to school with them. If they have misplaced the card over the summer, you may request a new one using the form. Link, pass key: NOVA1234
Common Sense Media Agreement for Parents/Students
At NOVA International Schools (NOVA), technology is a vital tool for learning and communicating who we are, what we value, and how we represent our family, school, and community. Because our technology choices affect ourselves and others, and because technology is a privilege, not a right, the expectation is that students will abide by and support this agreement both in school, even when on their own data network, and out of school. Please take a moment to sit down with your child to review the Common Sense Media Agreement for Parents and Students. Link
REMINDER about Alma Accounts
You will start receiving Account Activation emails from Alma so you can activate your Alma account. Please note that this is for parents, not students since elementary students do not use their accounts. You can access your child(ren) account(s) to see their schedule, attendance, and report cards in Alma.
Student SeeSaw Accounts Are Open!
Each of you will receive an invitation to join your son/daughter’s class on SEESAW (school learning platform). The email will provide you with instructions on how to join. Please log in as yourself on your phone/device. Homework assignments are typically posted on SEESAW. This is a wonderful alternative to correspond with your son/daughter’s teachers.
To assist you, please use this helpful link. If you need assistance, please reach out to your son/daughter’s classroom or email Ms. Emily at emily.dunnagan@nova.edu.mk
Tutoring Program
At Nova, we offer a 1:1 after-school tutoring service for students who need additional academic attention. If you are interested in this service for your child, you can formally request it using this link. Then the school will work to locate a match for your child. Please read more about the program using this link. Reach out to Natasa Mitevska with any questions. natasa.mitevska@nova.edu.mk

August 24, 2023 Lunch Menu Week #2
Dear Elementary Parents and Community,
It was wonderful to see you at this week’s parent events: New Family Orientation, Preschool Parent Meeting, and ES Back-to-School Meet & Greet. With our new format, we were able to engage more families. I will attach the slideshows for those of you who were not able to attend the opening parent meetings. Tables were available for parents to sign up for transportation, school kits, PTA, and hot meal service. Also, folks could sample the new menu items. Delicious! The children had fun playing with balloons and eating ice cream. Parents had time to go to their children’s classes, have a tour, and meet the teachers. A fun time was had by all.
First Day of School
We were thrilled to have the children back! This brings purpose to our lives. The kids were happy to meet their new teachers and to reconnect with old friends! New students were introduced and quickly found met new friends. Each teacher spent time on a teambuilding activity. Each class collectively wrote working agreements - i.e. class expectations. Students are remembering routines from last year and learning new routines. They were angels! We are off to a great start!
New Social/Emotional Curriculum - Second Step
We want your child to be successful in school and that means supporting and encouraging their whole development. While excelling in academic classes is important, children also need skills to take on learning challenges, make good decisions, manage strong emotions, and get along with others.
Next week, we’ll begin Second Step® Elementary, a research-based social-emotional learning program designed to improve children’s social-emotional skills. Second Step skills and concepts are designed to help children both in and out of school. The four units will cover the following:
Growth Mindset & Goal-Setting: Children learn how to pay attention and manage distractions, develop a growth mindset, and apply goal-setting strategies to their social and academic lives.
Emotion Management: Children learn how to identify and label emotions and use emotion management strategies—including stress management for older students—to calm strong feelings.
Empathy & Kindness: Children learn how to recognize kindness and act kindly, have empathy for others and take others’ perspectives, and recognize kind acts and empathy as important elements of building and maintaining relationships.
Problem-Solving: Children learn how to identify and state a problem, recognize if a problem is an accident, and use the STEP problem-solving process:
S: Say the problem
T: Think of solutions
E: Explore the outcomes
P: Pick a solution
You’ll receive weekly communications from your child’s teacher to help you reinforce Second Step language, skills, and goals at home. If you have any questions about Second Step Elementary, please don’t hesitate to contact our ES Counselor, Jana Shishkovska, or your child’s teacher for more information. Thank you for your support as we work to build a safe and supportive school community.
Healthy Lunch & Snack
Please remember to pack a healthy snack and lunch for your child. Soda pop is not allowed for ES students during the school day. What goes in their bodies matters for their learning!
Students Arriving Early
Supervision in the ES area begins at 7:45 am . I you need to drop your child off earlier than this, please do so at the Secondary School door. They have someone on duty. Then at 7:45, the children will be escourted to the ES area.
