The library collection at Nottingham School accomodates students from Kindergarten through 8th grade. Starting in 6th grade, students are allowed to check out books that are considered “Young Adult” or “YA” from our school library. These titles are incorporated with the rest of the older fiction sections and are designated by a yellow “YA” sticker at the top of the spine. We also mark them as such in our library catalog, with a message that alerts staff when the book is scanned.
Young adult books tend to have more mature content, hence why they are restricted to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. Books marked as “YA” may reference or have plots that incorporate mature situations, drug-use, gore, violence, or what some consider controversial issues. When purchasing these books, I use the publisher’s suggested age range, as well as age range suggestions from trusted book review websites, such as Booklist, Kirkus Reviews, Publishers Weekly, and School Library Journal, to help decide if the book is a good fit for our library. I look for books to be appropriate for 6th grade and up if it is considered “YA” by Follett, a library education company specializing in providing a variety of educational products to schools, colleges, and public libraries.
Because each family has their own definition about what is appropriate in their household, you have the option to opt-out of your student having access to “YA” books. This form is an OPT-OUT and should only be signed and returned if you DO NOT want your child to have access to these books.. This decision will stand for the remainder of your child’s time here at Nottingham.
If you have any questions about the books in our library, or about this process in general, please do not hesitate to contact me at school.
