The ACT testing institution says that a strong curriculum is the best preparation for the test, but some may want additional options to explore.
Learning Express Library: Notre Dame has a subscription to the Learning Express Library, which includes FREE ACT preparation for every student. To get started, see Mrs. Powderly in the Media Center to get your account started (you have to set up the account on campus to fully activate it). This is a great, no-cost option to help you get more comfortable with test questions.
ACT classes: there are some area class options, including Mrs. Layton's class at ND (1 session), at SEMO (4 sessions, 1 per subject), and through a group out of Sikeston called We Teach Solutions (1 session off-campus during a school day). These options range from $40 to $75.
The Guidance office has fliers for SEMO and We Teach Solutions in the Guidance Office, and students can see Mrs. Layton for more information in room 404. You can also visit the following webpage for SEMO's class: http://www.semo.edu/continuinged/act-prep.html
SLU High in St. Louis offers a 7 session prep option on their campus; for more information, visit https://www.sluh.org/act-prep-course This option is $425.
Test Prep books: We have two versions/years of free test practice books in the Guidance Office to provide students with question practice and give them the opportunity to see what they are missing, work with teachers, etc. Practice books for purchase are also available through reputable companies like Princeton Review, Barron's, Kaplan, and directly from ACT; some of these also include a DVD so students can have some auditory input and structure to help them break up the practice format. These typically range from $10 to $75, with many in the $25 to $40 range.
Ordering your test: Students can order their test/answers from National test dates on the ACT website for around $20. This includes a copy of the ACT test taken and a print out of the correct answers/student answers. Often this is good for a student is "stuck" at the same score or in general has taken the test a number of times, has tried other prep options, or just cannot break into the scoring range they would like to. This option would be best coupled with some tutoring with a teacher or other resource support.
If you need more information on any of these resources, check with your Guidance counselor.
