What is a Magnet School?

Magnet Schools are free, public schools of choice operated by school districts. Magnet Schools typically have a focused theme and curriculum that is aligned with that theme.

What is an Intradistrict Magnet School?

An Intradistrict Magnet School is a school that accepts students from other schools within the same district. Norwich families with a middle school student will now have a choice between two theme-based magnet schools.

Who can apply to attend these Magnet Schools?

Applications will be accepted for Norwich students entering grades 6 - 8.

How can a family apply to one of Norwich's new Magnet Schools?

A parent/guardian must complete an application for each student applying. Applications are available online at www.norwichpublicschools.org/apply. Paper applications are also available all Norwich Public Schools, or at the NPS Registration Center (located at the Bishop Early Learning Center on East Main Street in Norwich). The deadline to submit an application(s) is Thursday, March 31, 2018. In early April 2018, Norwich Public Schools will hold a lottery to fill the magnet seats available at each school. The lottery will be open to the public.

Will siblings of children who attend one of the Norwich Magnet Middle Schools automatically get into the school? ***UPDATED

Yes, siblings of students who attend one of the Norwich Magnet Middle Schools will receive preferred status at that school.

How will families be notified when their child is accepted into one of the Magnet Schools?

All families will be notified of their application and acceptance status by mail.

What if my child already attends one of the middle schools? Will s/he be able to continue attending that school?

No. All entering and current middle school students are required to apply for the 2018 - 2019 school year. The following year (2019-20), only students entering the Magnet Middle Schools have to apply.

My child currently goes to a Norwich Magnet Elementary School. Will my child automatically get into their school of choice?

Past graduates and current fifth-grade students of Wequonnoc Arts and Technology Magnet Elementary School will have a direct pathway to Kelly STEAM Magnet Middle School if chosen on the application. There are no other direct pathways at this time.

Can you apply to both Magnet Middle Schools?

No. Parents/Guardians are only allowed to apply to one Norwich Magnet Middle School.

When will the lottery occur for the Magnet Middle Schools?

The lottery drawing will be held in April in the Kelly Community Room.
