Second Grade Curriculum

Reading and Language Arts: Superkids

Math: Pearson Envisions

Superkids is a reading curriculum that is used K-2 in our district. Students who were at Maplehurst are familiar with the series and characters that are used. Every two weeks we rotate fiction and nonfiction reading. On our fiction weeks, we have chapter or picture books that we read in leveled groups. During our nonfiction weeks we read in our SUPER magazine.

We use Envisions for our math curriculum. Homework will come home each night when we finish a lesson (with the exception of Friday). One of the most important things you can do for your child is help them study and memorize math facts for addition and subtractions. Students who can master those facts with speed, can move in to multiplication and division. Envisions does provide many new and challenging ways to solve problems, but it is always good to know the old fashioned way of doing things. Stacking when you add and subtract and regrouping or borrowing, like mom and dad used to do, are what we want mastered! Using the other ways to help enforce or to provide another way to learn are resourceful when helping your child. These provide another way to show children who might not understand how it was first delivered.
