Worldwide avalanche detection using Sentinel-1

AVAMAP - Worldwide avalanche detection using Sentinel-1 is a one year project (08/2018 - 07/2019) funded by the European Space Agencies EO Science For Society Call.

We envision that avalanche detection using Sentinel-1 SAR data is feasible in any snow-covered mountain area worldwide. We thereby wish to test and validate our automatic avalanche detection method in six selected areas worldwide.

By doing so, we will:

• demonstrate the ability of the Sentinel-1 constellation in consistently monitoring avalanche activity anywhere on Earth.
• provide selected avalanche-prone regions with consistent avalanche activity data for an entire winter.
• start to build-up long-term datasets of avalanche activity, which are important for infrastructure planning, hazard mapping, and climate related studies.
