In order to graduate from Norton High School, students must earn 21 credits, demonstrate competency, and earn 2 graduation seals. Please see below for information on each of the graduation requirements.
All Students are required by the Norton City Schools Board of Education to earn 21 credits of class by the end of senior year to graduate.
All students must earn the following:
4 credits of Math, including Algebra, Geometry, and Algebra 2 (or equivalent)
4 credits of English
3 credits of Social Studies including World Studies, American Studies, and Government
3 credits of Science
1 credit of Fine Art
0.5 credits of Physical Education
0.5 credits of Health
0.5 credits of Personal Finance
To graduate, students must earn a "competency” score of 684 on the English language arts II and Algebra I end-of-course tests or complete other options. In lieu of attaining competency scores on the state tests, students can choose between four other ways to demonstrate competency following remediation and second test attempts.
Alternative Demonstrations of Competency
Earn credit through the College Credit Plus program in a non-remedial math or English course (for the subject area not passed).
Obtain a remediation-free score in the math or English subject areas on the ACT or SAT.
Contract with the military to enlist upon graduation.
Complete two of the options from the below list of seven, at least one of which must be a foundational option.
Foundational Options:
Earn a cumulative score of proficient or higher on three or more WebXams in a single career pathway.
Earn a 12-point approved industry-recognized credential or group of credentials totaling 12 points in a single career field.
Complete a pre-apprenticeship program, which program should be recognized by the Ohio State Apprentice Council (OSAC), complete an OSAC registered apprenticeship in the student’s chosen career field, or show evidence of acceptance into an OSAC registered apprenticeship program after high school if the program requires a student to be 18 years of age or older.
Obtain a state-issued license for practice in a vocation that requires an examination.

Complete a 250-hour work-based learning experience with evidence of positive evaluations
Meet the National Career Readiness Silver Level on the WorkKeys
Earn the OhioMeansJobs-Readiness Seal.
Students will demonstrate readiness by earning at least two diploma seals, one of which must be state-defined.
State Defined Seals
Citizenship Seal:
Score at least a 700 or higher on BOTH the American History state exam AND the Government state exam
Earn a grade of B or higher in American History AND Government classes
Earn a score of “proficient” or better in the corresponding AP course exams
Earn a grade of B or higher in corresponding CCP classes
Science Seal:
Score at least a 700 or higher on the Biology state exam
Earn a grade of B or higher in an advanced science class
Earn a score of “proficient” or better in the corresponding AP course exams
Earn a grade of B or higher in corresponding CCP classes
Ohio Means Jobs Readiness Seal:
Complete the documentation form and obtain required signatures to prove you meet the requirements and criteria established for this seal
Industry Recognized Credential Seal:
Earn an approved industry-recognized credential that is aligned to a job considered “in-demand” in Ohio and its regions
Military Enlistment Seal:
Provide evidence that you have OFFICIALLY ENLISTED in a branch of the U.S Armed Forces
Technology Seal:
Earn a score that is at least equivalent to proficient on appropriate Advanced Placement exams
Earn a final course grade that is equivalent to a B or higher in appropriate classes taken through the College Credit Plus program
Complete a course offered through the district or school that meets guidelines developed by the department (A district or school is not required to offer a course that meets those guidelines)
College Ready Seal:
Earn a remediation free score on the ACT or SAT
ACT English 18, Reading 22, Math 22
SAT Reading and Writing 480, Math 530
Honors Diploma Seal:
Earn one of the Honors Diplomas available
State Seal Of Biliteracy:
Meet the requirements and criteria including proficiency requirements on assessments in a world language and English. (Must be verified by a World Language Teacher)
Locally Defined Seals
Community Service Seal:
You must complete 10 hours of community service as defined by the Student Ambassador Program.
ALL seniors are required to complete 10 hours of community service, therefore you will have earned this seal by the end of senior year.
Fine And Performing Arts Seal:
Complete 3 credits of Art, Band or Choir
Student Engagement Seal:
Athletics: participate in 3 years of the same sport
Clubs: participate in 3 years of the same board approved club (club advisor will determine eligibility)
Plays: participate in 3 plays (play advisor will determine eligibility)
Students may replace one of the options highlighted in blue with a Student Strength Demonstration
Students must meet all but one of the listed criteria to qualify for an Honors Diploma, and any one of the criteria may be the one that is not met.
Student Strength Demonstration:
College Credit Plus: Earn 12 college credits through the College Credit Plus program
Advanced Placement: Complete three advanced placement (AP) courses with score of 3 or higher on the corresponding AP tests
Career-Technical Assurance Guide (CTAG): Earn 12 articulated college credits through CTAGs
Apprenticeship/Pre-Apprenticeship: Complete an apprenticeship registered with the Ohio state apprenticeship council; complete a pre-apprenticeship program recognized by the Ohio state apprenticeship council; or submit evidence of acceptance into an apprenticeship if the program requires applicants to be 18 or older to enroll
WorkKeys: Earn a score of 6 or higher on all three sections of the WorkKeys test (Note: Students seeking the Career-Tech Honors Diploma may only use this demonstration as a substitute for the World Language criteria. This demonstration may not be used as a substitute for the GPA and ACT or SAT Score criteria for purposes of the Career-Tech Honors Diploma.)
Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB): Earn a score of 50 or above on the ASVAB.
Work-Based Learning: Complete 250 total hours or more of work-based learning.
