What is Physical Education?

Physical Education is about understanding your body and what it takes to keep it healthy. Students interested in Physical Education have the opportunity to study the NCFE Health & Fitness qualification. This course is perfect for students that are physically active, interested in sport and have a thirst for understanding the health & fitness aspects of PE.

How will this subject benefit me?

This course will develop students' knowledge and understanding of how the different body systems operate during exercise and the most effective training methods to improve these body systems. They will be able to make positive decisions about their own personal health in relation to factors such as diet, training and injury prevention, as well as learning how a healthy, active lifestyle can contribute to an individual’s physical, mental and social well-being. 

Students will explore how various psychological techniques can be used to prepare an individual for competition and how biomechanical analysis can be used to improve performance further. The course also focuses on improving practical performance in a range of sports and health and fitness activities.

Who is this course appropriate for?

The course is appropriate for anyone that has a keen interest in the science behind sporting performance and how the body works during exercise. An active engagement in physical activity is essential so that theory can be applied to practical examples.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

Students will develop knowledge and understanding of the structures and key body systems and how they impact on health, fitness and performance in physical activity and sport.

Students will develop knowledge and understanding of both the physical and skill components of fitness and how they can be measured.

Students will develop knowledge and understanding of the lifestyle factors and their impact on the health and fitness of individuals, groups and society.

Students will develop knowledge and understanding of the principles of training and different training methods in order to plan and monitor personal training programmes.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

EXternal ASSESSMENT

Students will sit one external examination at the end of Year 11 worth 40% of the qualification covering all content from Year 10 and 11. It is 1 hour 30 minutes long.


Practical performance

Students are expected to fully engage in practical activities both inside and outside of school. This will contribute to their grade but will not be assessed directly.

Synoptic Project

Students will complete a written piece of coursework worth 60% of the qualification based on a brief released by the exam board. This will be completed in Year 11.

WHAT OPPORTUNITIES WILL THIS GIVE ME?

This qualification leads seamlessly into studying A Level PE or Level 3 BTEC Sport. PE can lead to a career in Sport Development, Teaching, Coaching, Nutrition, Physiotherapy, Sport Science, Sport Psychology and Journalism amongst other careers in the Sport & Fitness sector.
