How will this subject benefit me?

You will develop practical skills in photography and in digital image manipulation using Photoshop. You will learn how to develop and express ideas through the medium of Photography. The course will prepare you for a career or further study in Photography and other fields of Art and Design. You will be able to create exciting and imaginative artwork, in a personal and expressive way.

What will I learn?

Who is this course appropriate for?

This course is crucial for any student wishing to pursue a career in Photography or other forms of visual art and design. Students of a wide range of abilities will be able to access the course and create rewarding work. The course is appropriate for anyone who enjoys being creative, and learning about the work of other artists and photographers. Students need to use I.T. for much of this course, so it is important that you have (or would like to develop) technical skills, as well as enjoying being creative.

How will I be assessed? 

COMPONENT 1 - Coursework Unit 60%

This unit runs from September in Year Ten until December in Year Eleven. The course is initially teacher-directed, with an emphasis on technical skill development. Students learn how to use DSLR cameras, photographic techniques and digital editing skills. Later in Year 10, students develop individual work.

COMPONENT 2 - External Assignment 40%

Students develop a visual response to one question from the exam paper in lessons, and produce a final outcome during a Ten Hour Test. The preparation time for the exam starts in January and continues until the start of the exam (usually in May).

What opportunities will this give me?

Studying Photography is crucial for anyone who wishes to pursue many forms of visual art, including Photography in the future. This includes: advertising, graphic design, illustration, textiles, fashion, photography, television, theatre and film, architecture and teaching.  GCSE Photography will give you the skills needed for further education or employment including: creativity; commitment, team work, confidence, leadership and dedication.
