Geography

GCSE 9-1

AQA

How will this subject benefit me?

This exciting and relevant course studies geography in a balanced framework of physical and human themes and investigates the link between them. Students will travel the world from their classroom, exploring case studies in the United Kingdom, higher income countries, newly emerging economies and lower income countries. Students are also encouraged to understand their role in society, by considering different viewpoints, values and attitudes. Upon completion of this two year course, students will have the skills and experience to progress onto A-level and beyond.

What will I learn?

The course is made up of 6 topics and a pre-release:

Paper 1: Living with the physical environment

Paper 2: Challenges in the human environment

Paper 3: Geographical applications

All key skills will be taught throughout such as: a sense of place, enquiry, independence, teamwork, GIS (Geographic Information System) and Field work.

Who is this course appropriate for?

In Geography, we learn through enquiry so we expect a lot of independent work. However, we will help develop these skills over the course. We encourage team presentations and work to show a variety of opinions. Whilst the majority of work is completed within lessons, we also carry out some fieldwork as part of the learning experience.

As a department, we would expect you to have an interest in learning about our global natural environment, futures of our populations, human landscapes, tectonic hazards and their impacts, and why our world differs in development, all along with an interest in widening your own opinions, presentation skills and decision making skills.
