FRENCH

GCSE 9-1

Edexcel

How will this subject benefit me?

Learning a foreign language to GCSE level gives you an edge that not every student in the area will have.  Some students continue with languages in the sixth form, but for those that don’t, having a language at GCSE level will open doors, no matter what you choose to do after Year 11.  From getting by when you’re on holiday, to helping out a colleague with translation, languages serve you well in all walks of life.

What will I learn?

Who is this course appropriate for?

Languages are suitable for all students who want to broaden their horizons and better their life chances.  Lessons are a real mix of activities, from independent study and vocab learning, to pair and group work, and whole-class games and competitions.  There will be a mixture of listening, speaking, reading and writing activities in most lessons.  Languages are suitable for all abilities. All students have the opportunity to take French. Students who are taking both French and Spanish in Y9 have the option of choosing between these languages.

How will I be assessed?

unit 1

Listening exam - 25%

Unit 2

Speaking exam - 25%

Unit 3

Reading exam - 25%

Unit 4

Writing exam - 25%

What opportunities will this give me?

Some students go on to study languages at A Level and then at university, but for those that don’t, having a language at GCSE level adds another dimension to your skillset. Lots of local employers look for staff with a working knowledge of a foreign language to help with their export markets.  At university, you will be able to combine languages with most degree programmes to give you a joint honours degree, for example Engineering or Business Management with Spanish, and Hospitality Management with French.
