How will this subject benefit me?

This course focuses on practical cooking skills and the structure of the Catering Industry. It will develop your understanding of nutrition, job roles within the industry as well as health and safety procedures. In addition to this, it looks at the provenance of food, factors affecting food choice and planning menus, and how to prepare and cook different foods. 

What will I learn?

The course builds on the practical skills students have learnt at key stage 3 with an emphasis on core skills, preparing students for a possible future in the catering or nutrition based industries. Dishes and research will also reflect current food trends such as seasonality and improving healthy lifestyles.  You will also learn:

Who is this course appropriate for?

Students will need to be organised and possess good practical food skills. They should enjoy preparing and cooking a range of challenging dishes whilst having a passion for understanding the nutritional impact of ingredients, their physical properties and an interest in the role and responsibilities of the Food Industry. Students should be able to carry out independent research and planning.


How will I be assessed? 

Controlled assessment 40%

UNIT 2: Hospitality and Catering in Action

(Written piece of work and a practical exam)

final exam 40%

(90 Mins written paper)

What opportunities will this give me?

The food industry is one of the largest and fastest growing sectors in the UK. There are a range of jobs to suit different interests and abilities. As well as some of the more well known careers in the industry, there are highly paid and highly skilled careers such as nutritionists and food scientists. The Hospitality and Catering course allows students to build on their practical skills while learning the nutritional value and the way different foods interact with our bodies alongside how the Hospitality Industry works.
