The following is a list of questions asked and scored during the TRAIL – IN inspection: visual inspection of these items and skills will be completed.
1. Are the girls properly clothed? Fleece or wool hats, mittens, ear protection, thermal underwear, winter jackets, corduroy or woolen pants. Remember! Denim and sweats are not acceptable. Polar fleece is OK. Combination glove/mittens are not acceptable.
2. Are the girls properly shod? This means insulated, waterproofed boots that have boot tongue stitched to boot.
3. Are all the packs neat, properly packed and weather tight? Everything should be secure. Pack should be lined with trash bag and sleeping bag should be double bagged or in waterproofed sack.
4. Are pack loads proportional to the weight of the girl? About one fifth to one fourth her weight.
5. Does the patrol have a first aid kit or does each girl carry her own?
6. Does the patrol leader have a workable compass and can she use it?
7. Are there three pails for dishwashing?
8. Are all sharp tools properly sheathed? You cannot feel the sharp end.
9. Is each girl’s rain gear readily accessible? It should be in an outside pocket of pack.
10. Does each girl have waterproofed matches or matches in a waterproofed container? Matches must be carried in her pocket for this inspection.
11. Does the patrol have a waterproofed menu and waterproofed kaper chart?
12. Is the patrol flag flying?
Note: Only the following can be carried in the hands: Patrol flag, clipboard, lanterns, Cook kit, Dutch oven and event equipment. Pails may contain rope. This gear may be transported with the rest of the troop gear on a toboggan or dog sledge. If you do not have a dog sledge, there will be several there for your use.
The following list of questions are asked and scored during the CAMPSITE Inspection.
1. Is the patrol flag flying and is it weatherproof?
2. Are the patrol menu and kaper chart waterproof and posted?
3. Has the patrol stored food properly and safely?
4. Does the patrol have a food preparation and eating surface off the snow?
5. Is all patrol camping gear orderly and off the snow?
6. Is the patrol fire site adequate and safe?
7. Has the patrol stored tinder for the next fire?
8. Has the patrol gathered sufficient firewood for the next meal? Is it off the snow, is it neat, is it covered?
9. Does each girl have a flashlight that works?
10. Does each girl have a personal toiletries kit (soap, towel, toothbrush etc)?
11. Does the patrol have adequate shelter to camp in comfort?
12. Will the tents shed snow?
13. Has the patrol planned comfortable beds, insulated from the cold and snow?
14. Are tent floors or ground cloths free from snow?
15. Has the patrol made the best use of the assigned site?
Note: All the fire requirements apply even though you may be cooking with propane.
1. This is a patrol event. One girl will explain the meaning of the flag.
2. Every member of the patrol must be represented on the flag.
3. The flag must be designed and constructed by the girls
4. The same patrol flag cannot win two years in a row.
SCORING: The flag will be judged on originality, durability, theme, clarity and attractiveness. The explanation of the flag is highly considered. There will be a first, second and third place.
1. This is a patrol event.
2. Two girls will participate. One will identify the stars and the other will record.
3. You will be given three minutes to complete the event.
SCORING: Points will be awarded for correctly identified stars and constellations. You will not be penalized for incorrect answers. Spelling does not need to be precise.
1. This is a patrol event.
2. Two girls from each patrol participate as a team.
3. You will follow a compass course with several changes in distance and direction.
4. You must bring your own compass.5.
5. You will be given paper and pencil. You may use a pace card. You may not use a calculator. You may not plot the course trigonometrically.
SCORING: Points are awarded on how close you come to the destination. There will be a first, second and third place.
1. This is a patrol event.
2. The entire patrol may participate in gathering wood during the contest.
3. Only one girl at a time may build or tend the fire.
4. You cannot bring wood or tinder to this event. You may not use a handful of matches as tinder.
5. Only regular, strike on the box, matches are allowed.
6. You may not stockpile wood. All wood must be gathered during the event.
7. You may use aluminum foil under the fire lay. You must bring your own foil.
8. Only Cadette patrols will be supplied with a fire starter.
SCORING: This event is run in heats. Each heat will have a first, second and third place.
1. This is a patrol event.
2. No more than three scouts per patrol may lash. Two of these scouts will pull while one rides. The rest of the patrol may hold the poles while the three lash, but they may not participate in any other way.
3. The rider must ride with two feet on the six-foot pole and one hand on each ten-foot pole. The travois must be dragged, not carried.
4. Bring your three 15-foot ropes with you when you report to the event. If you have more than one patrol, your patrols may share equipment. You may bring your own poles; however, there will be poles there for you to use. You must bring your own ropes.
5. Make three lashes using the following methods: SHEAR: Start with a clove hitch around one pole, then five wraps around both poles, then two fraps. End with a clove hitch on the other pole.
SQUARE: Start with a clove hitch on the standing leg (top or bottom), then three wraps, followed by three fraps. End with a clove hitch on the cross piece. Make all standing leg wraps on the inside of the previous wrap. Make all crosspiece wraps on the outside of the previous wrap. DIAGONAL: Start with a timber hitch or clove hitch around both poles, then three wraps diagonally each way, followed by two fraps. Finish with a clove hitch around either pole.
6. Please use clothesline for all lashing.
7. The event will start with the poles lying on the ground and the rope coiled beside the poles.
1. This is a patrol event.
2. The entire patrol may participate by holding poles. Only two scouts may do the lashing.
3. You must use only one rope for the upper lash and one for the lower lash, two ropes total.
4. You must use one six-foot pole and two ten foot poles. 5. Bring your patrol flag on a six-foot pole when you report for this event.
6. Poles may overlap no more than two feet.
7. When lashed together and held erect, the flagpole may not bend more than 45 degrees with the vertical.
8. If your lashed flagpole bends more than 45 degrees, you may try again and fix it. However, you do not get to enter another heat.
9. The event will start with poles lying on the ground and rope coiled on the ground.
10. Cotton clothesline works best for lashing.
11. There will be poles with 3-4 inch diameter provided if you do not wish to bring your own.
12. Bring enough rope with you to do all event lashing. There will be no rope there for you to use.
13. No visual prompts for knots are allowed by anyone participating in the event. (Written directions of steps or image of knots)
SCORING: This event is run in heats. There will be a first, second and third place. Add the order of finish plus mistakes. The lowest total wins each heat.
1. This is a patrol event.
2. The entry must be completely baked on site.
3. Send only a small portion to HQ for judging. You will be given a plate. Fill out the information on the bottom of the plate. You will be given a card to submit your recipe. 4. Please bring entry to the kitchen by 7:00PM.
5. Participation points are awarded as long as there is something on your plate to the kitchen by the deadline.
SCORING: The entry will be judged on taste, appearance, ease of effort and appropriateness for winter camping. There will be a first, second and third place.
1. This is a patrol event.
2. The event will involve either Girl Scouting or outdoorsmanship.
3. The event may or may not be run in heats.
SCORING: Will be determined by the nature of the event.
1. This is a patrol event.
2. Three members of the patrol participate.
3. We supply all equipment.
4. The team will run a straight line course using our snowshoes.
5. At the finish, the team will have six snowballs to toss at the target.
6. The bullseye is a 12” diameter circle at about 4 ft high and 10 feet away.
Snowballs that do not go through the bullseye are misses. 7. All three members of the team may toss snowballs, or you may choose to have your best marksman take aim.
SCORING: The event is run in heats. 5 points for the first finisher, 4 points for second and so on plus one point for each bullseye. High score wins. There will be a first, second and third.
1. This is troop event, not a patrol event. If you have multiple patrols, they must select only one scout from the troop to compete.
2. You must bring your own bow saw.
SCORING: This event is run against the clock. The best time wins. There will be a first, second and third place.
1. This is a troop event, not a patrol event.
2. One scout rides in the sledge, one scout steers from behind and up to five scouts from the troop may pull the sledge.
3. A troop with less than six scouts may borrow a rider only from another troop.
4. You may build your own sledge or borrow one and bring it with you. There will be sledges at the event that you may use.
Please do not borrow from another participating troop.
SCORING: This event is run against the clock. The best time in each division wins. There will be a first, second and third.
