Digital Literacy & Computer Science Standards

In June 2016, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, in partnership with Massachusetts Computing Attainment Network (MassCAN) and Massachusetts Computer Using Educators (MassCUE), published the new Digital Literacy & Computer Science Curriculum Framework (DLCS). This framework replaced existing standards from 2008.

"The vision of the Massachusetts Digital Literacy and Computer Science (DLCS) standards is to engage students in digital literacy and computer science skills and concepts through the integration of practices, while making connections to what they know and the world they live in" (DLCS Framework, p3).

During the 2016-2017 school year, the NPS technology committee embraced the opportunity to reflect on current instructional practices as they relate to the new DLCS framework. Much of the content in the new framework is not currently taught within the Norton Public Schools. Some standards are taught in specialized classrooms such as Computers at JCS, LGN and HAY, STEM at NMS and within the Business & Technology Department at NHS but there are gaps especially in the area of Computer Science. To accomplish our goal of integrating technology across all disciplines, the NPS technology committee worked collaboratively to identify Power Standards for each grade span within the larger DLCS framework. These Power Standards allow staff to integrate the DLCS standards across all subjects in a manner that the committee feels is manageable. The Power Standards may be utilized when staff are planning daily lessons but should not be separated from current grade level or subject area curriculum--integration is key. We encourage all staff to view the NPS Power Standards associated with their grade level(s) and submit questions, ideas, or concerns to Karen Winsper, Director of Instructional Technology.
